Alexander Grothendieck, Edward Witten, Donald Knuth, Stephen Hawking, David Baltimore, ...

There are tons of highly influential people, depending on the field. However, if you consider impact on other people, and influence on others, I would argue that Bill Gates or Vladimir Putin probably win out.

Michael Jackson:

I knew some hardcore criminals who said they changed because of the song Man in the Mirror, which is a great song.

Sadly though, I think he was a victim of child abuse and it made him crazy and he kind of killed himself, which has mess up his legacy. If he could have restrained himself and been a better public figure, I think he could have been much greater.

Music people tend to be forgotten in a generation or so too.

While I don't debate that computers have had a positive impact, it's not as if we've seen exponential growth from their introduction.

They've also introduced all sorts of deviancy into our societies:
Porn
Online dating thus making hypergamy and family structures worse
Groups for weirdos and deviants thus making society worse
Exacerbation of lies and echo chambers

I'm not going full Unabomber, but simultaneously, computers have not really brought about some massive societal change for the better, yeah we live slightly longer than the 80s and one can argue our quality of life is higher, but realistically all that computers ensured is that morons can take selfies, can post awful opinions to echo chambers, can jerk off whenever they want, can find support for whatever weird **** they're into.

The low IQ masses use of computers has not been offset by inventions by high IQ individuals having more access to info and other high IQ individuals. Actually, by many metrics, you can say society is declining; stagnating wages, falling marriage rates, increasing divorce rates, lack of sovereignty over one's nation, endless migration, destruction of rights around the western world etc.

So yeah, call me a negative Nancy, but I don't see progress, at best I can see a flatlining and computers have really done **** all for us to offset the BS they've helped create.

Actually, Mao Zedong was alive 50 years ago, so he definitely wins.

Scratch that...Dirac died in 1984, Robert Noyce died in 1990.

I'd argue any of these 3 were more infuential than Bill Gates.

I give the edge to Paul Dirac. Jack Kilby and William Shockley were also alive in the last 50 years as well.

This isn't highlander, there can't only be one.

I'd say Trey Parker (and Matt Stone) were up there, though. Changed what you could do on TV. And unlike "Jerry Springer" (trash entertainment) or "Jackass" / "CKY" / "Big Brother Skateboarding" (excellent, youthful, rebellious energy, but not exactly intelligent) which arguably helped society just as much, SOUTH PARK and pretty much everything they do is intelligent, well-thought out, but most importantly, hilarious.

You make great points.

But, the same kind of stuff could be said about cars, guns, factory farming, and lots of other inventions. Cars create a lot of waste, blow up, crush people to death, create pollution, but they have been an amazing device that's helped humanity a lot.

I am amazed and hate the influence of porn on average people. I think it's bizarre that there's so much porn and that it's free with no way to stop children from watching it. I believe this may be a conspiracy to pervert children.

However, the internet is beyond amazing for the kind of communication we are having.

I use ******** to "see" people who I can't see and that's nice because I can't see these people any other way.

I'm an avid learner, and although the internet isn't as good as a complex book, it's a great learning tool. It's good for learning simple things, like the origin of words, which is a favorite thing of mine. I was watching a show based in Viking times and wondered about the history of pants, lol. I looked it up and learned about the history of pants.

But, what you've said is correct, your IQ level will determine what you get out of things and every good invention seems to be able to be perverted in the hands of the stupid. Still, I think we must attempt to facilitate the intelligent as much as possible.

I think Musk is a fake and will disappear.

He talks about too much science fiction stuff to be real. If he was real he'd be focused on things that are actually possible.

His cars are a novelty.

Only people with homes, where they can be plugged in, can buy these things. So, the millions who live in cities, apartments, etc cannot have one no matter the price. So, I don't think his business will turn into something mass numbers of people will use.

I'd say that's more of a Wozniak/Jobs accomplishment. Apple was a hardware company.

Gates and Allen with Microsoft were software guys. What they did was create a shrewd business model getting their OS pre-loaded onto x86 architecture PCs and getting a license fee for it. This made them ridiculously wealthy and inspired a whole lot of hobbyists and nerds to follow in their footsteps, in effect, creating the commercial 3rd party software industry. It had started before them for sure, but they allowed developers access to the guts of DOS/windows so they could create the SW for the PC (an open platform) that made it a useful tool for homeowners to buy. Jobs (stupidly) kept the Mac closed. You had to pay Apple to become a developer and get access to the documentation you needed. This wasn't the case for the Apple ][, but when they switched to the Mac, that's when and where Microsoft and the PC won the war against Apple.

Without the relatively cheap box on the desk that could run precisely the software you needed to run, which you didn't have to develop in house, the modern economy and working environment as we know it, wouldn't exist.

So Gates is the guy. Smart and shrewd and the most influential. For sure, if he and Microsoft hadn't done what they did, somebody else would have come along within in a few years and accomplished the same thing, but Gates was the guy who was in the right place and right time and rightly deserves credit for it. The PC revolution literally changed the world.

It very much is. Bill Clinton refused to prosecute online pornographers with indecency laws we already had on the books. In the mid-90's, social conservatives were calling for it and he refused to act. What shows up on google search is still very much illegal, but the federal government is not prosecuting it. What 10- and 12-year old kids are being exposed to online is a crime. It's natural curiosity to google this stuff, but what they are seeing on google is unnatural and is disrupting the neural networks forming in their brains.

Since people already have the tech angle covered, I'll say Ronald Reagan or Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn.

Both had a hand in bringing down the Soviet Union which was most destructive force of the twentieth century.

I think the question isn't who was alive in the past 50 years who did something influential, but who was alive who did something in the past 50 years that was influential.
