HFCS more prevalent. Obesity increased.

The problem with HFCS, it's trash. It's way more impactful (negatively) than any other carbohydrate (which we eat way too much of anyway).

Fructose can ONLY be processed in the liver, like alcohol. Regular glucose, which is bad enough with the way it spikes insulin, it can be used by every cell in the body as energy. You overeat on glucose, well odds are it's in the form of something that had some value, like a potato or rice, fiber and such, it digests slower, your body has more time to process it, more time to use it as energy and every cell in your body can use it. You can certainly overeat on glucose but it's a lot harder, however, you take in enough and when your body can't store any more glycogen in your muscles or liver and isn't using it as energy, then it gets stored as fat.

Fructose, meanwhile, goes straight to your liver. Your liver stores a ton of glycogen as energy, which is great, but most people are not active enough and are eating too much, so it gets stored as fat, with fructose being much more immediately stored as fat on your liver itself, which is just terrible health-wise.

Fruit, which is also high in fructose, tends to have vitamins and minerals and be high in fiber, all this balances out the fructose to a degree (although I recommend fruit in moderation, not one of these high-fruit diets, esp if you're losing weight or trying). HFCS, you quickly get way more than what you find in nature (which was already modified to be sweeter and higher fructose anyway), often no fiber, often with a lot of calories and fat and often with no vitamins or minerals (junk food, sodas, ice creams, etc).
All truth passes through three stages. First, it is ridiculed. Second, it is violently opposed. Third, it is accepted as being self-evident.

point being that muh insulin isn't effected by eating sugar and the correlation between poor insulin sensitivity and sugar intake isn't there. You become more insulin resistant the fatter you become, regardless of what you eat to get fat. So sweeteners and insulin is the modern day scape goat, people eat more than ever due to convenience of it and how many calories are thrown into everything you buy in restaurants. I also wood bet good money the amount of people who snack is directly related to the obesity rates, you ever worked or been around fat people? They literally can't go an hr without eating a bag of m&m's or whatever and that chit adds up during the day. Constant snacking, high calorie foods at meals and overall lack of giving a chit is the reason it continues to rise.

I'm not saying people are insulin resistant specifically because of the presence of sugars in their diets. I'm saying there was an anti-fat or fat-fearing wave in the late 1900's and people were tricked into thinking their foods were good for them because they were low-fat.

In reality, they were extremely calorie dense and people were getting fat. Like you said, it's fat that makes you insulin resistant, not high-carb diets, but when you're eating a crazy calorie surplus made up primarily of simple carbs, they'll end up as triglycerides, a fat, in the end anyway.

I also agree that the continued obesity epidemic is caused in part by our culture. Convenience is king and the sedentary lifestyle is the norm now.

i think it definitely played a roll because you could slap a "reduced fat!" or "low fat!" sticker on oreo's when of course it's low fat when the serving size is 1 oreo. Greedy marketing is brutal to the world as a whole imo

But, and this is just something i've become a true believe in being around a significant amount o morbidly obese people, I truly think if there was a hard push to not snack and only eat 3 times a day we'd see rates drop. It's absolutely pissening seeing a morbidly obese person eat their 4th pack of candy within the past 2hrs say "i don't eat that much i just have bad genetics" when i've concluded it's cause they think they don't eat much at meals, which they probably don't since they slammed 1500 cals in between their last meal and the salad they're about to eat.

I was thinking, you ever wonder if there's a connection to the falling rate of smokers an the rising rate of fat people?wouldn't a nicotine addict have the potential to become a food addict, same way heron addicts take up cigarettes ie become nicotine addicts when they quit? Like everyone that quit smoking in the 90s and 00s just replaced their addiction with food...

Technology has dumbed people down and made people more lazy.

A lot of these new tech companies strive to make things more accessible.. which eliminates the need to move around and do certain things.

What I think is bad, is gymcels who workout 4-6 hours per week are considered extremely active... But compared to the day-to-day physical labor/life in general of previous generations, today's gymcel would be considered sedentary AF...

Internet access/technology correlates better with these obesity graphs than any other variable.

Of course! People always find a habit or activity to replace another habit. Some people smoke to curb appetites and cure boredom. Remove the cigarette and now people become restless, bored and eat to cure the boredom.

honestly an interesting thought since i think those with addictive personalities will always have to have something that satisfies that hole (heh). I mean just listen to people talk about dieting hunger is basically withdrawal similar to any other substance. Easy, cheap, legal dopamine fix

very true. all these technological services enhance our ability to cater to the day to day grind while allowing access to all the "services" or "dis-services" we "need".. And guess what, you don't have to do a thing! Everything you need is at your fingertips. Need your dog walked? We have that service for you! Need groceries? Don't fret, we will have someone deliver that to you! Need your car washed? We have wash bays and people to do that for you. All these technological advances are efficient but make humans less sufficient.

"One day I won't be able to lift any more. Not I won't want to lift. I mean physically unable. That day could be decades from now or it could be tomorrow. All I know is that's the day I'll wish I could lift more than ever. The day I'd give anything for one more workout, one more set, or one more cardio session. So go hard and enjoy every workout, every set, every rep. Because one day you will wake up and you will never get it back."

I've seen old family pictures that capture public areas (parks, city, events, concerts, etc.) from the 1940's and 50's and there is literally nobody overweight in them. I just can't believe it.
