$1050 a month plus bills. I live in a state with 0% state income tax. Got a cat recently and it'll increase it by $20 (plus a pet deposit fee).
As a whole it's a good goal to keep your rent/mortgage at 25% or less of your take home income pay. This is a good rule of thumb to assess how you're doing, regardless of your geo location.
I make $70k before taxes... which translates to technically $4200 after federal income tax.... which makes the $1050 figure exactly 25%, and then I'm losing 6% extra due to 401(k)... so that puts me closer to $3,876... which makes the $1050 figure closer to 27% overall.

I think it's interesting that all the misc salary threads bring out the 100k+ earners and yet in this thread hardly anyone is paying over 2k/month.
Obviously there isn't a 100% correlation of high income leading to expensive rentals/big mortgages but there's going to still be a noticeable correlation.
If you're making say, 150k+, you really don't feel a 3k/month rent/mortgage unless you have an assload of kids in a high COL area.
On topic:
I'm about to refi and should be paying about $4800/month (mortgage, taxes, HOA).
Obviously there isn't a 100% correlation of high income leading to expensive rentals/big mortgages but there's going to still be a noticeable correlation.
If you're making say, 150k+, you really don't feel a 3k/month rent/mortgage unless you have an assload of kids in a high COL area.

Two properties, two and three acre. One am living on, and that's on a secured line of credit. Min payment is like 250 a month but generally put about $3000 a month on it to pay it off fast.
The other is just property and that's a mortgage at 380/month. When both are paid off in a few years gonna build on the second one.
Renting is quite a bit more expensive than a mortgage here.
