You can call it cope all you want to, but stories like this hit hard. I couldn't imagine my kids going through a death like that. It's terrifying. And every time I read a story like that there's always the "it can happen to anyone". Then you read stories about people who have left their kids in a car and just went along with their lives after the kids got taken away.

But sure, call it cope because I think people should be punished more harshly for stupid "accidents" like this.
Leaving small kids alone in a turned off hot car is extreme child neglect, nothing less. As a parent, I'd be pissed if some brat kid were constantly leaving marks on my kid by hitting/biting her and the daycare consistently said "We don't know anything about it. Golly gee shucks, guess we can't try to stop it, lulz". Any reasonable parent would feel the same way. Meanwhile, an oddly large number of people are willing to make excuses for people who "accidentally" let their kids fry to death unattended in hot cars. It's a joke.

It's a moot hypothetical for some of us, because we're not the type of piece of chit "parents" who would ever let something like that happen. If a parent put their kid into a strange pitbull's caged yard by themselves to "play with the dog" and the pitbull mauled the kid, I doubt you'd be playing the "It was an accident so we should be understanding!" card for the parent... why is them "accidentally" leaving their child to suffer a horrifying death in a hot car any different?

simple,
have motion sensors in the car, when car is off if there is movement lights flash and horn goes off alerting people there is someone in the car. only way to turn off the motion sensors is to manually shut them off

That's making an excuse. As said before, if I did happen to do something like this, I wouldn't let myself live. Yeah, it happens, but all I'm saying is that there shouldn't be excuses made. Period.

Also, there's plenty of other people saying the same thing as me, yet you focus on my comment, in particular.

Feel like a real man offs himself in that situation, assuming he doesn't have other kids.

So you're tired, probably rushing to get to work, distracted because you may have some big things going on at work that day and you just go through the motions of driving to work, parking and leaving your car.

I know I've been driving at night before on a route that I always take and I get to where I'm going and don't even remember driving there.
I have an extremely inconsistent schedule and run on ~4 hours of sleep far more often than I'd like to. How transportation for my kid works out between me and my wife is anything but routine, and changes on the fly quite a bit. Yet neither of us have ever come anywhere close to "forgetting" our child in the car under any circumstances.

Sorry, but I don't have sympathy for people who do that chit and let their kids die as a result. They should be court ordered to fry in a hot car themselves so they can see what their kid(s) had to suffer through. Your kid running off on the way into the house and getting a bloody nose by tripping on the concrete is an accident. Letting them die a horrible death in a hot car by "forgetting" them in there is extreme negligence, not a simple "accident".

I agree with this 100%, I just think we should stop making excuses for it.

I'm not saying it can't happen, I just can't fathom it happening and the people who killed their kids to actually go through to court.

The comment about the car sensors would be good. Or even something after market you put under the seats.

Instead of saying "Oh, this can happen" how are we not doing more about it?

I've never even forgotten my cat in a cat crate or dog in my car, let alone my kid. Hell, I rarely forget a cold bottle of water or soda in the car. There's something seriously wrong with someone who forgets their kid(s) in the car even one time.

Like I said before, blaming car makers is a joke. I'm not against them trying to implement new features to make it harder to forget kids in the cars, but lmao @ acting like that's even a small portion of the issue.

Maybe we need to teach people to quit being such self-absorbed pricks and that their kids come first in any and all situations, and quit showing sympathy towards chit like this. I mean clearly, making excuses for it on any level hasn't helped prevent it from happening.

I'm not making excuses. I think it's absolutely horrific that it happens. I just know that people are not perfect. I can't even fathom ever forgetting my child was in the car. I never did. But I can't say that someone that this happens to is purposely trying to murder their kid(s). Leaving kids in a hot car to run into a store, yes. Having your routine change one morning and going to work on auto pilot, running into work in your normal fashion? No, I don't see that as purposeful.

Yeah, I don't think car makers are at all to blame, but maybe if we had something like that excuses would be taken a lot less often.

I don't know. This is the one topic that gets me overheated every time and despite trying to ignore, I always get baited into being pissed off about it.

Same with those stories about kids being left to die while people just go on about their lives neglecting them in a swing or whatever.

It just makes me genuinely feel sad. I worked at CPS for a while and I think it got to me.

I think I'm too worked up about this, but what you say is 100%.

My stance is that no one should get the excuse once it happens, is all. I've read stories where the parents were charged just with neglect in cases like this where the kid was found before dying.

I don't care how busy you are how could you possibly forget unless you have a very low IQ or did it intentionally? I'd sooner not forget to wear my pants when heading outside than to leave a child in a car.

I totally get where you're coming from. It's a horrible horrible thing to happen. But my point is only that people can say "I would never....." from now to eternity but well. We're all human. We are not perfect nor infallible. I can say I don't think I'd ever do something like that, but who knows what could happen in the future?

I mean if ur tired af and zoning out while driving to work and you forgot that Tues is ur day to bring kids to day care. Kids were up all night so ur tired af. You are driving and the kids are sleeping and its quiet af. You mindlessly drive to work bc thats what you do everyday. I see your point. But I feel like if I had kids they would be on my mind constantly and I would never do something like that. It’s human instinct to protect your child above all else. How do you forget them in a hot car?
