Then after that probably gets abused by other kids in the group home while unable to defend himself, ofcourse he's gonna act out. Poor kid could really use a hand.

But I thought when you were a quadruple amputee, you get a letter from the police saying you're allowed to be exempt from all consequences!!

Video does not show why the subject was taken down or how 'violent' he was before hand. I'm guessing the body camera video will either be damning evidence against the cop or will justify his actions. The group home needs that guy reviewing the video to start responding to handle violent situations. Obviously he's the expert.

I get called to a retarded group home some times. Occasionally its because they are acting out. And once I had to arrest one for attacking another resident. Obviously the prosecutors office will drop the case because the kid is retarded. But the group home also requires action being taken plus he needs to get kicked out of the group home due to his violent behavior.

Its a crappy situation but you have to do your job. Regardless of the suspects disability. And if said suspect would have gotten violent I'd have handled the situation as though he were an adult with a full functioning brain.

Why did the group home call the police in the first place? Why not handle it themselves?

It's in the cliffs, and in the quoted article.

Isn't there some type of de-escelation process?

No ones hating on cops here. Isn't there some type of de-escelation process?
The cliffs and article do not indicate why. He may have spit in his face, swung a punch at him, swung an object at him, thrown something at him, etc. We really don't know. All we know is at one point the Deputy is on top of him and he's shouting and swearing. Who knows, maybe the deputy lost his **** just because the guy was yelling and went overboard. No way to tell without the body camera video. This video and article is pulled by a defense attorney specifically trying to make the deputy look bad. We're only getting half of the story and its skewed against law enforcement.

Its a hard call on what kind of 'de-escelation' you use on someone that's handicapped. In general, you ask someone, you tell them, then you make them. If they are mentally retarded you typically make an extra effort to calm them down. And that usually does work. Some people are just crazy and violent and can't be reasoned with. At a certain point you have to do your job and resolve the issue that you were called to the scene to handle. Sometimes its not necessarily pretty.

Deputy most likely could have made other decisions. Probably shouldn't have lost his cool and shouted afterwards. Who knows. But this story isn't about him beating the guy, tasing him, spraying him, etc. He just got on top to control him. No injury inflicted. It just 'looked' rough.

Maybe next time someone dials 911 and its a handicapped suspect. He tells whoever called he can't help them and goes about his merry way so he doesn't get involved in another **** storm.

[/edit] I do want to say he handled that poorly hah.
