In the USSR, when people lost everything, all they had was their families to rely on. The weak women left their men and whored around. The strong women and men kept their families together even in hardship. Our culture is fuked. When times get bad, that's when you know who really loves you. Everyone "loves" you when you have everything going for you. But those who will stand by you when you have nothing are the only ones worth loving back.

While dating someone for money is bad, I don't think we can isolate wealth and personality like people often do, when they discuss such topics.
The jobs we do, are a huge part of our personality especially, if we are passionate about them. A succesful surgeon will be considered smart by the vast majority of people and he will be even more respected for saving lifes daily. Both are rightfully true. We spend the majority of our days making money are to a bigger or lesser extend depending on what we do with our free time defined by our jobs. After all that's what we do.
Also one does not simply lose all his money and while staying the same person. Such a thing will change someone's personality drastically. At least for the next couple of months the person, who lost everything will understandbly be bitter and hard to be around.
