I was always active, played sports in school and gym class was my favorite subject. The guy's high school coach would always pull me into gym class with the boys. He introduced me to the weight room at 15 and I was hooked. I started working in a local gym at 16 and the competitive bb's took me under their wings and showed me the ropes. I stayed consistent with my training and started competing in female bb after I had my 2nd daughter. Stepped on my first stage at the age of 32 and never looked back.

I've been serious about lifting for the past 4 years. Was off and on with it about 3 or so years before that time, but was very inconsistent with it. I was pretty self conscious in high school. I lacked confidence, so I decided to do something about it. Lost 60 lbs on my first serious attempt at weight loss (transformation pic on bodyspace). Currently on my second bulk cycle until April. Reasons for continuing - mainly for overall health and wellness. Self confidence, positive mindset, and daily motivation as well.

GJ bro^ I'm now clean too

I wake up every morning and feel like crap 95% of the time. I generally have anxiety, irritability and anger problems that can later manifest into acute depression/suicidal ideation. However...If I push myself with the weights, cardio, etc then I feel much better via endorphin response and my whole world is changed into something beautiful that I can handle. The difference is astounding, night and day. I guess genetically I was meant to exercise.

Its either I exercise or I take meds or do drugs or kill myself.

100% serious

Been lifting strait non-stop consistent for 12 years but really started when I was 14ish and went off-on till 19 when I got serious

I joined a gym when i was 15, went there with buddies just to shoot ****, hang out, try to get arms like Goku etc. I remember that spotting a friend on bench press and farting on his face mid-set was pretty much a daily thing for me and my friends.

Then my brother passed away when i was 16, and it got me into a severe depression, didnt leave my room for months, until one day i couldnt take it anymore, i needed to do something and since the gym was two blocks away i just walked there and started lifting again.

Im 28 now and still going strong. I got addicted to progress, getting stronger, getting more muscular, getting more attention from girls/family/friends, etc. TBH, after so long, im just used to having on the very least the best looking body on the room, those are just my standards that i hold for myself now. I cant be number two.

All in just a moment. And then, are embraced by the eternal sleep called death."

Honestly it was Gohan going into the hyperbolic time chamber that got me into lifting.

Got into it to get stronger to pass the volunteer fire fighting physical

Then started competing in npc figure

Then uspa power lifting

Then npc bikini

Now it’s my zen place, go everyday, me, my music, no kids, no hubby, it’s my meditation for the day and love lifting 10 years later.

I'm obsessed with constantly improving in some way and when I first started I was an xbox freak and then thought lets level up in real life with my body (srs)

I now do it because of mental health, I went traveling in Australia for 2 years and went 1.5 years without the gym and dieting. My mental health hit rock bottom, I never realised what the cause was. Now that I figured it out, I can't and won't stop. I worry about messing my week up with dieting and working out for the sake of my head. It makes me feel great, physically and mentally.

Once I could no longer get the same amount of attention for looking like Pamela Anderson (read the thread), I took a different approach- natural bodybuilding...fell in love with it! I guess I do have a couple of "narcissistic," but harmless traitsI'm half-kidding here.
Fact: My first-generation uncle was a boxer who fought Sugar Ray Robinson! He also fought in the war, sacrificing the career he deeply loved, so people could have the right to freedom.

i did some bodybuilding style lifting for a few years, and a little bit of powerlifting
i became a long distance runner and used it to supplement my running ablity
i took up rock climbing and use it as a way to keep my body strong enough to do that
im 33 now

so 10 years, and basically to supplement other activities (running and climbing)

Around a decade

ROI, what else would I do?

Lifting is a rational proposition, nothing more and nothing less. I can train 3-4 hours a week, look a bit better and mog the population, seems like a good deal to me, 2-3% of my week for being more attractive, having more respect, feeling better, looking objectively better and being haloed. Aite

Going to bump this.

Majority of all these lifting stories of building the foundations of the lifting lifestyle is hella encouraging. Might also be helping others in the process of self realization.

Let's keep this one going. Definitely keen to hear more.

Lifting on and off (mostly off) for over 20 years now.

I got into it wrestling back in middle school.

I just continue cause it's a habit/lifestyle, I'm trying to beat father time as long as possible.

Still lift but also into balance training, stretching too.

Didn’t want to be a skinny lanklet anymore. Made some noob gains and my confidence sky rocketed. That was 5 years ago. Now I feel like chit and can’t sleep good without getting a lift in.

Bumping this thread again after a couple of months.

I quite liked the responses here, brings out the true reason why people are actually lifting whether it be a lifestyle or just another hobby for them but what I mostly got is that people lifted due to a crucible that occurred in their life whether mental or physical

Lifted for a year back when I was starting HS

The 1 or 2 yrs in and after college.

Didn’t know chit. Just random exercises here and where.

Now 1.5 yrs later, I’m 42lbs lighter than my highest weight. Made every cutting and bulking and worst - maintenance mistake in the book lmao. But now I know my body way more than when I started.

Into it for myself - to get that athletic looking muscular body I’ve always wanted. I don’t aspire to be 10% shredded. Ideal bodyfat for me about 13 to 15% range.

Built me a home gym right before corona and don’t think I’m ever gonna stop...perma bulk/cut for the next few years. Then maintain

Hulk Hogan, Ultimate Warrior and Ivan Drago imprinted in my mind as a young chap that one must be jacked as an adult.

Started lifting when I was 15 (gym had 16 as minimum age but I lied on paperwork).

I keep doing it because it's the only time of the day where one can escape from life and the world. Inb4 the pump is like cumming

I remember the first day I got into lifting very clearly. I was 14 and saw bodybuilding videos on youtube. When I saw those videos I got so extremely inspired and thought to myself I'm going to make it a goal to get the best body that I could possibly get. I bought some home gym equipment and started hammering away the lifts like bench, deadlift and curls. I even remember a day, like 2 weeks after I started to lifting I loaded up 300 pounds on my bar, failed it once and then rested for an hour, went to watch motivational gym videos, rushed back to my garage and lifted it with like 150% adrenaline.
I weighed 115 pounds at that point.
Honestly I became really strong but I perma bulked. So I trained for 2 years non stop then took 2 years break. Now after the break I'm back training for 4 years and reached a 320 bench which is not extremely impressive but its decent for 180 pounds. My deadlift was always my best lift but now my back is injured so meh :/
Lol XP, anyway good thread.

I thought I was bulking at 0.5lbs per week. Looking back, I was not progressing in my lifts and was gaining only 0.1 to 0.3 lbs per week. I was also at maintenance for about half the time I thought I was gaining. Lame I know but it is true.

Also was eating my macros correctly but did not get enough fruits and veggies

Originally joined misc as 300lbs high schooler.

Went on to lose around 100+lbs doing keto before keto was really a thing.

Then tested myself and got ultra jacked to around 220lbs

Then lost all my gains from 3ish years of cancer treatment. Which included a bone marrow transplant last year.

Currently workout to stay healthy and look good.
Pathetic I'm in better shape than 80% of men my age considering what ive gone through.

21 years

Stopped playing sports because broke single mom. Started lifting at 13 to get energy out, most likely. Got my hands on some free weights, and did really dumb sh!t until HS football. Lifted a lot through HS, but only weighed 160lbs at 6’ when I graduated.

Started getting serious and less lazy with my lifting at 20, but consistency was still an issue. About 24, finally realized the error of my lazy ways and have been very consistent for the last decade. I’m 34.

Natty gains, and I’ve considered gear, but every friend I’ve talked to has told me about boner troubles and other side effects they’ve had using. No thanks.

I lift to fight off the reaper now, I have a family, so I wanna stay young for them. Looking good and being stronger than the average person is a bonus at this point. Currently cutting for the first time in 3 years.

I’ve always done competitive sports at a high level, and when I got a little older 15/16 I wanted to add some muscle as well... but then I realized I wanted to go the academic route instead of trying to become a pro athlete. Because of this I wanted my workouts/training to be scheduled around my life, instead of my life being scheduled around my workouts - only working out at a gym (+ cardio sports like running, biking which I think is boring) allowed me to train whenever I wanted.
Got class at 08 and social activities after? Workout at 06.
Spend a night out? Workout at 20.00 the next day.

I always loved lifting and because it is so easy to fit around a schedule I can keep doing it.

It’s also something that helps de-stress, it’s something to look forward to almost every day and it’s one thing outside everything else where you can always go hard and always try to progress, even if other things are going wrong in your life.
Bad weather? Lift hard.
Broke up with girlfriend? Lift hard.
Bad grade? Lift hard.
