I've only been a listener for 4 or so years now... Can any of the long time listeners tell me exactly at what point the show went from edgy to essentially the Ellen show with a couple decent segments goofing on the staff members?

Maybe that's the genius of Howard, though. He only gives little bits of the staff news because he knows that's what a lot of people clamour for on a daily basis. He holds back the Sal bits in order to keep them scarce and original. I have to keep tuning in/out to find those segments. They are so cleverly mixed in between the awful news sections and interviews.. Some of which aren't half bad, admittedly, but nowhere near as good as the bits about the staff.

Although, the callers always seem to love the interviews? But, it's not difficult to screen/select callers to say what you're looking for them to say.

I would say midway through the satellite years after her got married to Beth. After years of pushing the envelope with his perverted 7th grade sense of humor he decided to be more serious. Maybe now that he was super rich he wanted to be more accepted by other celebrities. I have heard that a new general manager was hired and supposedly she was instrumental in toning things down but Howard had to have been in on it and agree with it.

The show is a shadow of its former self. His interviews get more out of celebrities than any other interview shows but personally, for the most part, I find them painful to listen to. I would much rather listen interviews with strippers, pron girls, wack packers and staff antics than most interviews now. The news used to be my favorite part of the show especially when someone like Gilbert Gottfried sat in but now its nothing but Robin botching days old stories and Howard looking at his watch waiting to go home.

If you've only been listening for four years, do yourself a favor and find early satellite shows and early - mid 90s stuff to listen to.

I think you're right on the money. About mid-way through his second contract things took a turn for the mature. I wouldn't call the showworsenow, justdifferent.

I've been listening since 1996 or 1997 and was a Sirius subscriber before he came on so I've seen the show evolve several times now. The year pre-satellite was one of the best because Howard was constantly fighting with Tom Chiasano and the FCC over censorship, and it was fun listening to him skirt the rules - such as not being allowed to say "Sirius satellite radio" while still working on FM radio, having to say "When we move over to Uh-eh-eh we can do blah blah..."

The first few years on satellite were golden, Artie was at his worst (or best, depending on how you look at it), and 101 had all kinds of extra shows besides just replays and wrap ups. Tissue time, Superfan roundtable, Scott Ferrell, Bubba, etc.

It sort of coincided with when Artie left too.

2005 - 2012 or so were GOAT. Lord of the Anal Rings, Dumb as a Box of Rocks, Richard and Sal gay antics, roasts with Reverend Bob, Yucko, Sal apology, Sal crying when they trick him, 1-4-3, Sal's wife shooting him with paintballs, flying Gary to the moon, the wack packers were on point then too.

Apples and oranges. I'm talking about her campaign.I think some of it is just his age and softening up. He also probably doesn't want to ruin his second marriage and have his grown daughters view him as some old creep.

But yes, I gradually lost interest in the show several years ago and only tune in when they have an interesting guest on. It used to be that I never missed a show.

I agree with most of the responses you have already received ITT. I was a daily listener up until probably 2.5 years ago but have been a complete non-listener for probably the last 1.5 years. As mentioned already, the show is a shell of its former self. the first few years on satellite were awesome. Some of my favorites were when they would come in at night and do a roast. They were so funny. I think it was Nick DiPaolo that said that Gary's teeth looked like a row of urinals at shea stadium and I lol'd like crazy. It might have also been Nick that referred to Lisa Lampanelli as "Lisa Lump-n-jelly". Losing Artie sucked and changed the show for the worse. I miss comedians sitting in on the news like a stanhope or louis ck. Gilbert was funny in small doses. But yeah, its unfortunately unlistenable at this point
