I'm in NYC so practically everyone I meet is making 100k+ but friends who I grew up with (not in NYC) are making below 100k from what I'd guess.
I think the goal should be 1 mil liquid assets before 40, incomes can vary over time or from year to year.

also i thought we were talking mainly social circle, like friends.
i know a bunch of people with businesses. both my parents prob do > 100k in revenue, but im not sure how much they see.
i know my dad has insane overhead. my bro owns an insurance company, so prob there, though im not sure how much he specifically is pulling in. his wife is a corporate lawyer in nyc
when she was an intern she worked at her firm for 3 months and made 90k LOL (nyc). she's partner now so prob a milly plus. her parents are insanely rich. her half bro worked with bill gates on internet explorer
but in terms of people i keep in contact with, text, go out with, etc. not many

Where do you live? You’ll find far more people making six figures in major cities than out in the boonies, but cost of living also scales up. The numbers don’t mean much without context
In my industry, a person could hit the trades right out of high school and within four years be making a $40+/hr Journeyman base in O&G. On a 10/4 rotation @ 10hrs a day, that would be $115k just in wages and without any more intensive shifts or overtime. But seeing really young Journeymen is not overly common

Well....I was making 100k when I was <35, now I'm slightly >35, but still over 100k.
The answer - I don't know the exact percentage, but a huge amount of people I know are over 100k - literally every single person I work with has a base over 100k (Tech in Silicon Valley). In social settings its lower, but everyone not in the >100k range is at least somewhere around ~$70k if they are a professional of any type. One of my tenants is a teacher, so she probably makes the least of anyone ~$55k, but she also works the least, is the least intelligent, least interesting, least motivated, least capable, took the easier major in college (Creative Writing LOL), and complains the most about how unfair society is, everything is racist & sexist, blah blah.
Let that be a lesson for those of you struggling - you WILL get rewarded proportionally for the level of difficultly on the path you choose - if you don't want to work hard, want summers off, work ~6 hours/day, have no stress & no metrics for measuring your performance, in a field which has an extremely low barrier for entry - you will make $50k - Which I know this is generally an unpopular opinion, I think is DRASTICALLY over-paying the skill level which our current teachers in public US schools posses.
If however, you want to work hard, have an IQ in the upper 1/3rd of the population (Which most people on the MISC have, as scary as that is) and choose a field which is in-demand, competitive, and you consistently work hard, the chances that you DON'T make $100k by your mid-30's is pretty low....and it you never hit 100k, you probably screwed up somewhere.

My question to you is: why do you care? Do you think your life would improve if you met more people that, say, have 100k cash in hand p.a after all is said and done (taxes, other commitments/contributions/investments)? If so, why?

What bugs me is that i literally drive the oldest vehicle of all my friends, 2010 nissan frontier, everyone I know has brand new cars...priorities I guess. One day I'll get the nice wheels

A fair amount, I'd say about 1/3 of family and friends who are working adults are in that territory. It doesn't go very far in British Columbia tho.

I work in finance/accounting and am 5+ years out of school, so pretty much everyone I know makes $100k. $100k is nothing special anymore, especially in NYC/SF/LA that are insane to live in. Even in previously cheap areas like Texas, Atlanta, Denver, etc. apartment companies are charging upwards of $1800 per month for a modern 1BDR/studio apartment in the younger parts of town.
In short, $200k is the new $100k and $100k is the new $50k thanks to inflation (srs).

Honestly, 100k a year isn't that much in 2020. You're by no means 'wealthy.'
Working blue collar won't really get you there, unless you work tons of overtime. I know electricians and plumbers who regularly hit 100k doing that.
Mostly private medicine, etc in my circle. We're all hitting 200k a year regularly.

All of my mentors make six figures. A good bit of my friends I went to college with make six figures. Some of my friends don't or approaching it.
