Columbus is not judged by 21st century standards. He is judged by the Golden Rule- do unto others as you would have them do unto you. The Golden Rule is considered golden not because of its value (which is great) but because it is timeless. Pure gold never rusts or tarnishes. It remains in it's original state unless you deliberately diminish it by mixing it with some other thing.

I do agree that history should be understood in its context. It is useful to know what motivated people and how they justified their actions. People aren't binary creatures that are either good or evil. Not having evil or ****ed up thoughts doesn't make someone a good person. Not acting on or, even better, not entertaining evil and ****ed up thoughts is what makes someone a good person.

We all have bad impulses and not every thought that crosses our mind comes from our own volition. Temptations abound. This is all part of understanding empathy. Columbus was a man like any other and he had many temptations.

But the Golden Rule is timeless. It applies regardless of what era of men you were born into. If you subject someone to something you yourself would take great pains to avoid you ****ed up. You broke the rule. It doesn't require 21st century thinking to understand it. Conversely, it has always been understood. That is why 21st century thinking has evolved. But people still justify their behavior. They still mix the rule with other elements, causing it to tarnish and become diminished. The problem is that, for example, if one man can justify murder every man can justify murder. It's an all or nothing condition.

This is why the world is still filled with ****ty behavior and lost souls. Whether you and I agree or disagree about tearing down a statue is moot unless we take action. That might be true if standards of behavior don't change to fit the age, but they do.

500 years ago, the Aztecs had no problem with human sacrifice. Of course, today Mexicans understand that the practice is an abomination. Yet, Montezuma is still a national hero to them. There are no Mexicans demanding all statues of Montezuma be pulled down, nor is he vilified in Mexican textbooks for children, that I'm aware of.
