This. I had a friend call me back when I applied for my current job and he was saying someone from my current job called him asking about me, work ethic, project management skills, goofs, etc.

Is going to your company's competitor not an option or would you not be comfortable burning that bridge? For me personally, if I went to a competitor, I'd basically be blacklisted with other businesses in the same market.
