My children, with whom I travail again in birth untilChrist is formed in you.
Galatians 4:19
Christ forms in us like he did in Mary.. she is a symbol for the whole church..
Jesus said anyone who hears the word and keeps it "is his mother"...

Oh wait, Joseph was at least 20 years old waiting for the grass to grow so he could play ball before God swooped in...making Joseph the second **** in recorded history.
Can’t make this up! LOL yes you can...

The author of the gospel of Matthew, wanting to “fulfill” the OT prophecy of Isaiah 7:14, was not being accurate to the source Hebrew, which would have just mentioned her being a young woman without reference to virginity.
It happens many times in the gospels, where the authors are trying to “fulfill” OT prophecy in their stories. Merely writing a story that a prophecy has been fulfilled, is of course not evidence at all of an actual amazing fulfillment of some prophecy.
So the answer is Mary is a virgin because of a likely mistranslation, and there is not really evidence for any of this including the individual in question outside the biblical narratives anyway.

2 Corinthians 13:5
5 Examine yourselves, whether ye be in the faith; prove your own selves. Know ye not your own selves, how thatJesus Christ is in you, except ye be reprobates?
Colossians 1:27
27 To whom God would make known what is the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles; which isChrist in you,the hope of glory:
Because the God who said, Out of darkness light shall shine, is the One who shined in our hearts to illuminate the knowledge of the glory of Godin the face ofJesus Christ. But we have this treasurein earthen vessels that the excellency of the power may be of God and not out of us.
2 Corinthians 4:6-7
Zechariah 2:5
For I, saith the LORD, will be unto her a wall of fire round about, and will bethe glory in the midst of her.

God loves himself some Rube Goldberg mechanisms, that's why Mary was a virgin.
When it comes your time to die, be not like those whose hearts are filled with the fear of death, so that when their time comes they weep and pray for a little more time to live their lives over again in a different way. Sing your death song and die like a hero going home.

What you stated is incorrect and made up fairly recently (last century) by atheistic/reform Jews and liberal Christian theologians. Similar to how they have started saying that Torah does not mean “Law” but rather “instruction.”
A young women/girl was a virgin in not only hebrew culture, Israelite/Judean culture, but Semitic culture in general. if she was not, then she was a wife or a whore in the eyes of society. The projecting back with feminist/leftist notions is really disturbing to me but it is happening, and has been happening.

It would not be surprising at all if the Greek interpretation was off the mark (actually there are questions even if virgin is definitely meant by parthenos in the Greek, but traditionally it is thought to signify virgin).
The main point though, is that the author of the gospel of Matthew is likely just making sure the pieces in his story match OT prophecy, so this is the reason “Mary is a virgin”*. In fact, the author is essentially just checking off the boxes throughout the entire 2nd chapter of Matthew, for example:
-Micah 5:2 has the ruler of Israel coming from Bethlehem? Solution: say Jesus was born in Bethlehem.
-Hosea 11:1 had the son coming out Egypt? Solution: make up a story about Joesph and the family escaping to Egypt briefly to escape Herod, so that Jesus can then “come out of Egypt”.
-Jeremiah 31:15 has weeping and great mourning for the loss of children? Reference this by inventing the story of Herod slaughtering the young males under 2 years old in the vicinity of Bethlehem (oddly unmentioned in historical record).
The author of Matthew even directly quotes scripture, using phrases like “for this what the prophet has written”...almost as if there is an agenda to fit the Jesus in his story to prophecy. Either way, simply writing a story that a prophecy has been fulfilled, does not mean any prophecy has been miraculously fulfilled.
So the answer to OPs question still is along the lines of: because of how the author of Matthew (for example) is interpreting Isaiah 7:14, in a desire to fulfill OT prophecy.
*: I put this in quotes since there is no extra-biblical historical evidence of Mary, much less evidence of her being a virgin. It is unclear what we are even talking about historically here.
