I used to be able to do stuff on 2003/ late 90s cars I had in the past but now they have so much chit going on I just pay someone.

Not worth phuking up something major because I unplugged a sensor or some chit

All parts stores like autozone or O'Reilly's will take your old oil. You just pour it into this big tank they have in the back of the store.

All of those things take a bare minimum of auto savvy and five minutes of YouTube. I like doing my own car work but lettuce not pretend it’s some super special thing. Most people don’t want to either waste time, get oil/grime everywhere, and/or **** up their multi thousand dollar vehicle.

When I was younger, I tried to do all the part swap type maintenance. It's pretty rewarding when you pull things apart and everything starts up without issue after putting it back together.

Have never changed the oil, lol... and probably never will. It's so convenient to just drop it off at a shop for a half hour and not deal with disposal or an oops-I-got-it-all-over-my-concrete-floor situation.

A while back on my ls1 ws6 the water pump developed a crack so it needed to be replaced. I took it to a shop and they wanted to charge me 650 dollars to replace it. I looked up the price of a stock replacement and it was like 100 dollars... I said **** that and took the chance changing in my driveway. Me and my friend took about 2 hours to replace it in my drive way. Would've been faster if we knew what we were doing. Spent a little over 100 because of new coolant and I got a 160 thermostat while I was at it.


Saved a chit ton of money.

Can’t stand doing mechanic work. I can and do depending on the issue but I hate it every step of the way.

No way I’m doing oil changes when it cost like $10 extra to get someone to do it. Time is my most valuable asset.

I understand that some "men" didn't have a father figure around to teach them how to do this $hit but YouTube is literally full of how to videos on just about everything... And its not a matter of if... its when... your vehicle leaves you stranded basic diagnosing , repair , & maintenance skills go a long fkn ways... So fine , you want to flex about paying somebody else to do your dirty work its ok to admit you just CANT fkn do it.

Not to mention women dont actively go out searching for men who cant fix anything but their BFF's broken heart... *******s!!!

It's not about the money. It's about when, not if, the quick lube is gonna fuk up your ride.

Weird its always been way cheaper for me to do oil changes then get a shop to. Most in my area charge upwards of 100+ dollars when I can buy oil for 40 bucks and do it myself. Might spend a tad more initially due to having to buy tools.

In the 18 years I have driven a car, I estimate I have had roughly 50 oil changes. I have never had a problem. 25% seems unrealistic.

Depends on whether you care about your car, its resale value, and only putting in OEM parts that are usually under warranty

For example if you buy a new lambo and think you’re too macho to take it to a certified lambo dealer to get it serviced, you’re doing yourself a disservice. But that’s pretty implied, if you have the money to afford a lambo then why would you work on your own car in the first place

You've been lucky. The last 2 vehicles I've changed the oil on that went to a quick lube place beforehand had 3 different problems.

Edit: I take that back. 2 problems came from a quick lube place on one vehicle and the other vehicle got its problem from the Mercedes dealership

I've never even put gas in my own car before. In California theres always people looking to make a buck so whenever im at the gas station ill find someone and give em a buck or two to fill up my car for me.

I recently replaced my radiator, hoses, and water pump in my lex with oem parts.

Lexus wanted 2200 to do the job, I paid 800 out of pocket and it took me about 6 hours.

If I made more, I’d pay to have it done because it is a pita, but my hourly rate is nowhere near enough to offset that cost.

^^This. I hate working on my car. But when they want to charge $700 to change a power steering pump which took me about 30 minutes and $60 in parts... i'm going to do it myself.

I can't remember the last time i went into a repair shop and didn't roll my eyes at all the bullchit they told me and the prices they asked. The part i mentioned above... the shop quoted me $170 for a refurb. lol GTFO

My dad was a mechanic, grew up around/working in the shop. I don't mind doing it, but time is an issue, I have a really good shop near me who is extremely fair, I've gotten to the point where I don't wanna even change the oil anymore. Maybe when the kids are grown, I might take time. Especially when I can pick up OT during the time I'd be spinning a wrench, doesn't make sense.

Making cars increasingly annoying to service yourself. Brb have to remove plastic cover before have access to undercarriage and engine bay.

Yeah even better if you have a very common car you can find videos on your exact model and generation of car.

I first started doing minor maintenance like 10 years ago when they told me my serpentine belt needs to be replaced and wanted $200 and Im like hold on, I can see the thing right there, it cant bethathard. Look up and the belt is like 30 bucks and youtube has videos of my exact car with it being changed out.

yeah engine bays are more and more cramped too. Really helps to find videos of your exact car and then decide if its worth the hassle or not and atleast you know what to look for if you pay someone the areas to check if they didnt wreck something in the process.

So much truth here. One of my friends was constantly taking his vehicle into the dealership for maintenance. Every damn time that thing would come out with something done incorrectly, half-assed, or not at all. Simple chit too like fluids.

I do pretty much everything myself because I want to know how stuff works ... so that in a chit situation on the side of the road I'm not standing around like a jackass for something that is a simple problem. Same reason I built my mountain bike from scratch prior to riding from Canada to Mexico. I didn't want to stuck in the middle of nowhere and not a have or know the solution to a bike issue. My buddy that went with me had a few issues. He paid for someone to do most of his bike work. I had to solve a couple of his issues for him during the ride. No fkn clue what he would of done if he was solo. I could write a book about that experience... what to do and what not to do lol.
