I thought "foraging" was going to be kind of lame, but it got kind of addictive lol.

I also Harvest Chaga mushroom in winter. Its the new in thing/superfood. Google it, its popularity is skyrocketing as an antioxidant. Makes a very good tea with a bit of honey. Chaga extract straight up kills cancer cells in the lab.

Would rep but on RC
See sig. As much as I can't stomach eating mushrooms, I've been taking chaga capsules since Feb for immune health. If I were to come in contact with the 'rona, the chaga basically helps show the virus the door almost instantly.

I did my first ever cut last year and the chaga tea kept me sane.

the pills must be extract eh? I simmer mine, but to get all the nutrients apparently you need to tincture it in alcohol.

Never tried that yet.

Exactly.

In just about every northern and eastern European country, wild mushroom hunting is practiced totally safely by families all the time. Americans have a weirdly irrational fear of wild mushroom hunting that is drilled into us at camp in the 5th grade or something.

To be honest the outdoors have been a part of my life since ever. Outdoor adventure leadership in university, always hunting, trapping, ecology. For example when young I would catch a critter, but that wasnt good enough. I had to research the chit out of it.

So i really already knew about these things, but never knew some of the names, if they were edible, etc. For mushrooms I just you tubed the hell out of it, and went on some foraging sites. They will tell you to try avery small amount the first time. I also started with the beginner mushrooms. As stated here there is some chit out there that will kill you.

The only question mark was exact chanterelle id, but when I learned that there were zero fatal look alikes, I was fine with it.

Start with one that grows in your area. Foraging sites will tell you which ones are easy for beginners to id. Thats the stage I am at anyway. Not stepping into advanced mushroom id any time soon.

European white truffles go for that much. North American ones fetch like 5-10% of that price. Also last year was more expensive then normal. 2018 was a cheap year and small whites from Europe got down to the 700 dollar a lb range. Could get primo big guys for 1300-1500lb etc..

It’s the reproductive spore from a large underground network, the one in Europe is massive compared to what’s found in North America and produces a much nicer/different product.

Didnt help in a physical sense, I just found it took away hunger a bit if I sipped it all day.

Psychological I guess, but maybe it suppresses hunger?

Just an anecdote, but it seemed to help.

I love mushrooms, and I've gotta ask this seriously: are these wild mushrooms just as "see ya later" as say store-bought enoki mushrooms, oyster mushrooms, etc.? Chitin is what makes mushrooms and corn kernels more complicated to digest--wondering if wild mushrooms would be any exception to mass-produced stuff.

Food for thought, one of my favorite and easy mushroom recipes:

Hahah fair enough. I don't dig through my chit either but after a giant hotpot meal consisting of packs of enoki mushrooms, man, you'd think you were infected with parasites the next day.

If you pick jack o lantern mushrooms instead of chanterelles you also will be in for "three days of violent purging" as one site put it. lol

I will try the above recipe!

I am on Georgian Bay, in Ontario.

I knew they had a relationship to oaks, so knew lots of places where oaks are among our pines, and there they were.

Sent friend request, and saw rep comment.

Not sure if I will apply to Alone, but my friend Kie (who is also gathering mushrooms this fall) tapped out second last I think this season.

Got pretty cut by the end of it though lol.

I have not done magic mushrooms, but hallucinating while trying to id mushrooms sounds...interesting

Magic mushrooms are beginner level. Once you graduate to expert level make some tea out of angel trumpet flowers and leaves but be careful since the seeds are poisonous.

Not srs. Whatever you do make sure you never do angel trumpets. I was never that stupid but I could tell you some stories... And people say growing up in the country is boring LMFAO

thats awesome bro. i wish i had a guide to take me mushroom hunting. I'm all the way in california though. Also, your friend is a beast! my lady and I were going for her but Roland was just way to set with Rockhouse and the muskox and the fishing. If Kie would have caught one or two more fish (or maybe not have dropped that one fish!) she for sure could have made it 100 days.

Truth. If you look at the seasons though, if you can get a big game animal down you will likely make it.

Like when Jordan Jonas was finished, he was like, "but I have 200 lbs of meat still, shouldn't I stay and finish it??" lol

Kie said she decided to pull out when she was warming her hands by the fire and would warm one side, and the other side was still ice cold.

in 2022 her and her husband Dave are guiding a snowshoe trip from lake superior to Moosonee. 90 days on snowshoe.

They asked if I was interested. Maybe for a month or so then pull out by train, but the whole 90 days seems like a bit much.
