thats cute but wrong. you could always swap insurances as long was you were always insured. if you lapse you were faked. Kaiser always allowed patients no matter what, but its a non profit. my moms on Kaiser and since she's poor she applied to have all oop expenses paid for. I hate that you can't go out of network, but at least there non profit
the cot of insurance is high of because we let everyone use the hospital-even those that can't pay. the ones who pay subsidize those who don't. if you landed in a hospital in Mexico with no money in some cases they keep you till you pay. no pay no go. I hate how Mexicans come here and don't their own way.

Trump removed the federal mandate for individual coverage.

The penalty is zero dollars. I believe this happened in 2017, and I do t think it changed.

However, I would not want to go uninsured. I only say that as a person with access to (actually) affordable and significant healthcare though.

Went to the hospital the other day with pneumonia. Within 20 minutes I was on an ECG, had my bloods and oxygen saturation done, IV antibiotics, chest x-ray, got 1 days worth of antibiotics and the prescription for the remainder of the week was $20 thanks to the pharmaceutical benefits scheme

Guess what the hospital bill ran me?

Well, by definition it is socialism. Personally, I don’t associate the same negative connotation as other people on this forum do.

Every aspect of our lives are socialized to a degree. Every single one. From food, to religion, to Trumps business ventures, to cars and down to this specific thread. Collective security, any support for “the wall”, to being able to flush our own toilets.

The way I see it, the argument is not about whether or not to have socialism. We do have it. In every country. I don’t think anyone would ever argue to completely get away from socialism. I know that hardcore republicans shutter at the thought of the word, but that is based on a lack of understanding.

The argument is not about whether or not to be socialized, the argument is about to what degree to be socialized.

We get to enjoy a great many freedoms living in America (or any developed nation). But that comes at a cost in the form of civic responsibilities.

We will never agree on what level of socialization is appropriate. This is because we all have different priorities. Simple as it gets.

Health, education and law and order are public goods

It is efficient for the government to at least organise them (if not pay for them) and it’s not socialism

Normal people in Canada don't feel anymore overtaxed than people feel in the US.. I think averaged across places vs the US it's like 25% vs 15%.

Where people really get bent over in Canada is the 50% capital gains tax.

The entire goal of Obamacare was to implode the insurance companies to make them look bad via Facism 101 (Keep private entities but government tells them what to do), which drove up prices to absurd levels. Then they figured Hillary would take office and show how the insurance companies are the issue (not big pharma) and that's when "Universal Healthcare" comes in and the government takes control and destroys healthcare forever. We all know how well government run entities are.

Basically I can't see what we could do at this point. We have to privatize it and create more competition to lower costs, but big pharma has a clamp on our healthcare systems balls. Universal Healthcare means I'm paying for people via my income to have zero repercussions for being fat unhealthy slobs and overdosing.

What a time to be alive.

I understand the car analogy but you're oversimplifying a complicated issue. You could have yourself and someone else who is the same age race weight height etc. That person takes care of themselves just as good as you do and boom you get cancer. Imagine him telling you it's your fault you didn't do regular oil changes.

I benefit from that care too. Because I am military. Go join the military and you too will have that benefit. POTUS is my Commander in Chief. I wish all the best to him. When I was active, we used civilian dental places because we didn't have military ones close by (USCG.....we are sometimes no where near big military bases). Civilian ones are sometimes much better. I lucked out, my civilian dental place had a retired military dude that really looked out for us.

I had "catastrophic" insurance back in the day, before ACA laws, it sucked because I paid, forget what it was but a lot of money to have a super high deductible but yeah youre fuked if you have no insurance and had some undiagnosed heart condition and had to cover a 100k hospital bill or some chit.
