In the U.S., what I find funny is how people will absolutely rail on about how much they hate unions for demanding decent wages/benefits from their jobs in a bargaining fashion (rather than simplistic government mandated minimum wage hikes). Meanwhile, 75% of those people who bitch about that chit have absolutely no issue with the povertycels who get government cheese ranging from subsidized housing/rent, utilities, food stamps, food/"necessities" for their kids, school meals for their kids, free school for their kids, dirt cheap gov college loans/grants, etc.

Anyone on those types of benefits should be wasting zero money on stupid chit, but the majority I've seen aren't exactly frugal types. Many of them basically get to use their crappy part-time/minimum wage types jobs as an allowance for their car loans on cars under 5 years old, phone contracts with the latest iPhones models, big flat screen TVs, etc.

Children should be punished for their parents poor decision making.

I mean what could go wrong with that potato logic?

It's not like there's a pandemic which has screwed thousands of peoples jobs/wages while they're still locked into debt repayments or there's a whole bunch of studies showing lack of nutrition stunts children's growth (physically and mentally) meaning this is going to add further strain on the country in the future.

It really works fine in countries that have more robust social programs. Eg. if you compare the child poverty rate in the US versus Denmark, before taxes and transfers they are pretty similar. After T&T, the child poverty rate in Denmark is something like 1/3rd that of the US.

Ensuring children of poor families can eat and develop properly, especially in a rare economic situation brought about by a global pandemic, seems pretty reasonable wherever in the political spectrum you fall.

Encourage people to do the right thing rather than compensate them for doing the wrong thing.

The more attractive you make not working and raising kids you couldn’t otherwise afford, the more people will do it. Their slice of the pot will continue to get smaller.

Two things, first, in the US there is an entire subset of the population who just doesn't want to improve. Second, I personally only ever see 62 cents out of every dollar I make, and that's not factoring sales or property tax. When will it be enough?

You can get like over 60 to 70k being a stay at home mom and spending time with the kids then slaving away at some job...I always saw them hanging out at the mall during the day while the rest are slaving away

I honestly wish my parents got into govt housing instead of paying 1000 for rent a month while working minimum wage and going school at the same time when we immigrated here. paying 1000s out of the pocket at the dentist while some criminal locked up gets it for free. What an unfair system

But here’s the thing: we are already paying for these kids to eat. The families already get paid by the state for this. That’s on top of free school meals. If they’re the poorest as the proposal states, their families already get nearly all (if not all) their rent paid for them by us. On top of this, we already have food banks.

In reality, the most tightly squeezed are the level above these. They don’t quality for the multitude of benefits the “poorest” receive because they work but they have to help pay for them.
