I was an accident and my father wasn't present in my life, despite living in the same house. And my mother cared absolutely none and was a gambling addict.
I remember looking up old picture books and i only saw my siblings. I have zero pictures as a kid. That should say enough as to how much my folks cared.
Not to go all dear diary here, but you definitely don't get the teachings/raisings etc you'd get from a normal household. And it sets you back for sure.

Hence why so many kids being raised by single mothers and broken families etc end up unsuccessful.
I'm sorry man. It seems like you had it way worse than me. I couldn't imagine what it would be like without my mom. Do you want kids of your own one day?

I completely agree with you about the family part. My brother has been there for me when friends weren't.
Your father sounds like a real POS. Stealing money from your own kid...thats real scummy.

I got beat but I would never fight back because it feels weird to me to hit your own father idk

It's good. He's my pops, been in my life since i was born, taught me discipline, hard work, put me in sports, etc. Im fortunate to have a dad like that and I think it'll be better in the years to come.

What I've accepted tho and it's all good, is that we don't have a "Friend" relationship a lot of people have with their dads if that makes sense(inb4 no ******* it doesnt). one example= people have had drinks with their dads and gotten plastered. I don't drink around him ever or my family at that. I don't go to him for friend problems or relationship problems, either I find a book that has the answers i'm looking for, youtube, or talk to the homies.

I had a great childhood. We were poor but I was happy.

It was when I grew up that I realized my dad isn't really a nice person. I don't know if he changed as he aged or if he was just able to hide it when I was a kid, but I don't talk to him anymore. He's pretty toxic.

I would love the idea of it. Because i think i would be a great father. But to have a kid, you need a wife/girlfriend. And it's very difficult to have a lasting relationship/marriage in this day and age. So i don't see it happening. But that's part of life. Some dreams you manage to acquire, some you have to let go.
The last thing i'd want is to raise a kid in a broken family because a sloot decided to cheat or whatever, or to raise a kid in poverty. So not having kids is still preferred to having a kid under those circumstances

If you do have good family members, definitely spend a lot of time with them and don't take them for granted. In this selfish shallow world, not many people willl legit give a damn about anyone else. If you'd get sick, watch how everyone suddenly disappears. You're lucky if a few people (mostly family) sticks by your side in hard times. People only love winners as they say.

It could always be worse. I can't complain compared to people living in poverty africa or slumdog india or war zones etc. But yeah it sucks nonetheless.

Haven’t spoken to him in 3 years. He has Bipolar Type I, so it’s been rough.

I’m thinking of reaching out soon. After all of this COVID bull****, you remember that life is short. If he died without me speaking to him one last time, I’d never forgive myself.

Same here. I have noticed that a lot with friends and their parents. They're always drinking with their kids, or at parties, and even smoking weed with them. I almost never drink and my father doesn't drink. When I was a kid he told me to pick an arm (was about 15), I chose my left arm thinking he's joking around like usual, and said that if he ever caught me drinking or smoking....that's the arm he's going to break. Stared through my soul. Didn't have a sip of alcohol until I was 21. Almost never drink around him or my mom. Nor swear. If I ever swore as a kid my mom would shove soap in my mouth holding me over the sink.

I also don't talk relationship problems or girl problems with him, or other stuff. Only work related stuff, man related stuff, and a typical father son relationship. Wouldn't want it any other way tbh.

He is a great dad. The dice could have been rolled totally different in terms to what type of dad i would have had.

But yeah I'm not going to him about sex, talking to him about bitches i fcuked or even messing around with.

Well when your dad is 6'7, and I was 5'5 at the time, and he doesn't drink, I'm going to listen. Especially since he is rarely serious like that.

But okay tough guy.

My biological father was the stereotypical beta provider so my mother decided to upgrade when I was a kid after cheating many times with a chad they both knew, the "new dad" was a psycho he hardly tolerated my presence and basically made me live in anxiety and terror all my childhood, he was used to rage explosions over non sense like me looking at a butterfly while he was talking to me or smashing my screen cause I moved a jacked from the chair.

Dad was too weak and stupid to do anything and just said "try to make peace", my mother was not mentally sane and needed anti-depressants anytime she didnt get her daily social interactions met so you can guess what happened when the "new dad" put her as a stay at home wife.

I endured terror my whole childhood and even got beaten for trivial causes till in my late teens I got bigger and beated them both, yes I beated my own mother and step father.
Nothing too heavy, just to make it clears I wasnt gonna take it anymore then mocked him and said that he was a piece of **** (something that would have got me killed few years before) and while he was insanely mad he did nothing cause he knew I was stronger.

I spent the following years basically mocking them and making it clear that they drove me insane and I just needed a reason to deal with them once for all.

Needless to say Im a total psycopath uncapable of mental peace and unless I make a conscious effort to hide it, you can see it from my vibes, while I never harm anyone nor bullied anyone it only takes a slight provocation for me to get beligerent especially if its people like my step father.

Im so ****ed up that despite I had many lovely girls in my life I never actually managed to make it last not only due to my emotional dryness but for the fact that in my childhood and early teens I was to stressed to actually socialize with others so Im afraid I never catched up, I then joined a MMA class to self medicate since weights dont really help anymore.

You can guess my average sleep quality...

When I watched the movie unhinged I totally related with the guy.

Wow. Satisfying. I LOVE to imagine the same to the complete scum loser I know in this position who tries to talk down to me when by literally every measure of humanity, he's below me and just about every remotely respectable human in the world. He's too dumb to think this through, I'm sure.

Spending time in a better network of men, with the kind of stability from a healthy family interested in their children, and meditating can help you connect. Knowing how to handle the edge required for most people (most people usually act like the dude you described) actually sounds like a good trait.

yeah having your dad tell you he'll break the arm he catches you drinking with at 15, aka high school will shape you up to be a better man than the ones that graduated with you.

I didn't drink till I was 23. The two times I got caught being rinsed/yucky/lit, etc my pops didn't joke with me it was moreso talks about you don't have to drink to get fcuked up and you have your future ahead of you, aka lectures, adult convos.

Shud have fukked them both too. Or just your mom. No need to get gay.

Was threatened with beatings but no actual whoppings.

He is a pretty swell guy, took me to saunas (like massage parlours w/o actual masseuses) when I was a kid in China. Also remember him buying me cool toys from street vendors.

Life in Canada just wasn't the same, dude smoked 2 packs a day and had to quit cold turkey... worked menial jobs and then became a tradie.

No Serbia wasnt a country at the time iirc. What youre referring to was Serbia v Kosovo, even then I'm not completely sure if it was considered Serbia or Yugoslavia still

My dad is great. He's always been a mentor to me and I've always looked up to him. One of the smartest men I've ever known.
