But back in China and Japan, people would absolutely know the differences based purely on looks and would tend to favor the one from their own country.

Light skin is considered more attractive in those countries. Hence why darker skinned Asians are considered lower on the social heirarachy than lighter skinned ones. Plus Japanese society became somewhat obsessed with American culture post WW2 due to American military occupatuon for years there, and it carries on to this day to an extent.

So all that said, it's no surpruse that they focus on glamorizing lighter skin and features that are closer to western ones than blatantly Asian features in their anime cartoons. Still though, you can tell features of characters on those shows that seem kinda Asian unless depicting a specifically white character. Part of it probably also has to do with wanting to appeal to western audieances as well as Asian ones so they can make a lot more money.
I don't think the money part has a lot to do with it.

Most money is still made in domestic and asian markets, the western market is a very small percentage of their profits.

Can you show me where he said he was ONLY influenced by Disney animals?

However you did say this:

They see those characters as Japanese. And if you look at photoshoots of Japanese models or movie stars many look quite close to mainstream animes.

When portraying non-Japanese people they normally codify them somewhat. White people often have huge jaws, posess scruff and are unusually tall:

Many characters are also nationally codified in another often really obvious way:
- Chinese people wear traditional chinese dresses and often have enough stuff in their hair/ears to decorate a Christmas Tree.
- Americans are 9ft. tall Hulk Hogan impersonators
- French have flowing blond hair and wear outfits somewhere beetween high fashion and Louis XIV.
- Germans are either nazis or knights

Lastly art styles differ greatly beetween Animes. The difference beetween a One Piece character and a JoJo's Bizarre adventure character is way larger than the difference beetween real life people. So yeah it's more how your brain processes said injo, than them actually looking Western.

I agree with most you said.

But it's undeniable that a lot of the most popular anime (and even japanese game) characters have typical white phenotyes and characteristics.

Overall anime characters look much more white than any other race.

because those dudes don't look like the princes from Disney movies at all and more like drawings from Carl Barks stylistically. When I was a kid, I had a Carl Barks drawing book and learning to draw Donald Duck by starting with two large eyes, than adding the area where the nose is, than the beak, than finishing with the head.
All the characters above can be drawn with the same formula(draw eyes, put nose below, than mouth, finish up head) and they all are in the same angle(at least above) he normally drew Donald.

I think your reading comprehension is off, but I think I know why.

He responded to your all white statement by showing you they weren't all white, a lot of them were animals.... and those played an integral part in the art style of anime. He even stated "Sigh, had no idea these were whites". You took that as him saying he was only inspired by animals.

You're adding this strange factor in where you're only talking about human animated characters.... that doesn't matter. You even agreed that Tezuka stated he was influenced by ALL Disney characters, not just humans or animals. If he was influenced by both, why did you say they were inspired by Disney characters which were all white?

You're forcing a narrative and being inconsistent.

Many East Asians idolize the European aesthetic. There most popular plastic surgeries over there involve getting a double eyelid fold, shaving down the jaw, and narrowing the nose. All of these are done with the intent to look more white.

And yeah, anime characters are based on whites.

Lol, he was implying only Disney animals inspired japanese animators. Never did I deny Disney animals were also influential.

And yes the other Disney humans that also inspired japanese animators...were 99% white. But yes they shared the same big eyes, etc as most Disney animal characters.

Btw, this is how Disney depicted another race, for example black:

Lol, anyway so you think anime characters look more white or asian in general?

This.

And also just cause tezuka guy was influenced by Disney in his heyday, why do you animators even to this day still draw their characters like Caucasians

Surely they should have learnt by now

- No I'm pretty sure you're just inferring

- That part of the conversation was about the eyes, and if both animals and humans were drawn with very large over exaggerated inhumane eyes, and the creator himself said he pulled from Disney characters with an emphasis on Bambi, Dumbo, and Scrooge, and if it's known to be far more expressive and can cut back on costs, then obviously they did it because they're trying to be white. Yep, checks out.

- Lol ok?

- Neither if I'm being honest. I definitely don't think of white people when I watch anime. Too many hair colors, styles, eye colors, bone structures, etc for me to just pin point them looking white. Skin complexion maybe? Could probably be an argument thrown in there, but outside of that nah..

Oh wait..
Because they were heavily inspired by Tezuka and wanted to keep the manga tradition. It really isn't a secret. Not to mention cost, emotion, etc.. all of these things have been discussed.

koreans on the other hand worship the white aesthetic, which is why they get plastic surgery to look as less Korean as possible.
Funny thing is that picture in the Op was made by a japanese guy. But yes they could've used a better looking asian girl, although in the end that wouldn't change much, the point is asian/mongoloid skull have different features than white/caucasoid skulls.

I think in a way you are right, but we are also focussing on certain traits, while leaving out others.
- large eyes > more common with Westerners, though their eye shape often kinda looks Asian still (especially Koreans tend to have similar eyes)
- slightly pointed nose > more common with Westerners, though noses are often unnaturally small and sometimes don't even exist and Asians to have smaller noses
- small super skinny frame > Definately Japanese

If we take Brad Pit as an example of a Western chad. He does not resemble Anime guys at all. (Jaw too square, squinted eyes, relatively wide shoulders)

I think maybe a huge factor of why many Anime characters look the way they do might actually be neotheny. Adults still having childlike features. Asians in general often look less developed. Maybe a lot of these traits and beauty standards actually stem more from trying to make characters look less developed and more childlike.
The tiny pronunced noses and the large eyes certainely fit with in with giving someone a "babyface" maybe more than with either race.

When Western girls get lip surgery, they do so to look more sultry and sexual not to look black. I think when Asian get large eyes they want to look younger and more like teenagers not necessarily white. While traits are common in certain races, they also carry some other meaning in a society. If a miscer lifts, he wants to look strong and in shape. He does not think about Kongolese tribesmen being naturally jacked thanks to genetics.

If you look at this 1945 Japanese cartoon

and then this 1958 Japanese animated feature

you can see a difference in animation quality and also facial changes. And I think it was done for practical reasons; Japan wanted to market their animation to an international audience and they didn't want very ethnocentric faces because it would remind people about the war and assume every stereotype of Japanese people (ex. derogatory names like slant eyes, so they changed the eyes to counter that image)

Damn that's a great find.

The difference between modern anime characters is immense. Old characters really looked asian.

There are many factors that come in to play here. But just bare in mind that light skin means you have higher social status and dark skin means you worked in the fields and did manual labor. There are some character who are clearly white like in Full Metal Alchemist which was inspired by German Culture but you can tell which one’s are asian.

Because Japanese people are white as fuk skin color wise, and anime is a FUKKING CARTOON. Cartoons aren't supposed to look like real damn life uness that's the art style you intentionally go for. Anime characters are generally Japanese by default, and when they draw Americans, it's generally in a very over the top, stereotypical fashion like this:

Or the black guy posted above. In anime, white people are usually tall, loud, have big ass jaws, and are happy go lucky.

Take a more serious anime like Death Note and people start looking more realistic/ethnically Japanese

Also, the big expressive eyes are influenced by Disney back in the early days of anime.

This is the most true. In reality modern anime is drawn to look like whatever you are. What you think your race looks like.

It's meant to appeal to all races by tricking you into thinking it's a character from your race. Except for joggers lol. Who gives AF about them.

BUT there is no denying they are more white in features than anything. It's halarious asians think they look anything like anime characters to each other.

I agree Light looks more asian but even in this example he has brown/light blonde hair, something 99.9% of japanese don't have.
