I love Archery. Need to get me a bow or make one from Yew wood soon.

I have made a bulls eye in the past on the range and qualified for a merit badge... twice. Second time I got it. Only reason I didn't get it the first time was because they didn't have bowstringing equipment so they gave me a partial which expired before the next summer.

I'd love to get a compound but I dunno.

I'm more of a Recurve type of guy. But why not both eh?

I've spent the last few days analyzing Google Earth and I think I know where the cows are. If there is a bachelor party of 23 bulls I can't imagine how big the herd is. This honey hole is in the middle of nowhere and in the last place you'd think would have elk. I'll be spending plenty of time up there over the next 10 months watching trail cams and learning everything I can about them and finding a nice mature bull with some good back scratchers. I don't think there is a better challenge than getting a nice bull with a bow. I'll keep bumping this thread with trail cam pics


Here's a few pics from last weekend. Sorry I didn't get any better ones of the elk. We bumped them and by the time I glassed them all with my scope for cows they were all quite a ways away when I grabbed my phone. Definitely some shooters in there and they'll be a year bigger when I have a tag next year.

Did some more scouting this weekend and checked my trail cam I put up there last time. This was down by the river so didn't expect any elk down there. Saw a ton of whitetail and this old guy. Only got a weeks worth of shots because I accidently had it on video and HD so the memory card filled up quickly. I also had it by too many branches and the wind kept triggering it.








Ended up buying another cam and putting this one further up the mountain range where I know the elk pass through. I'll be sure to post any pics.


While scouting, we saw a pretty nice buck that was hobbling around. He was about 500 yards away so it was hard to see but it looked like he had been shot. Seemed okay other than not being able to use one of his front legs. It's also a month past deer season so maybe he will make it another year. It's a tough 5 mile hike back into there so I'd imagine fish and game won't find him. What would you guys do in that situation?

I don't know if state law has any say on that, but if not, my thought is 1) it's probably in a lot of pain with no pain meds and therefore it would be more humane to put it out of it's misery than let if suffer, and 2) if you don't get him, the wolves will, and that will also be a worse ending for it. So, for me, that would justify going back out after it. If it's still there, I don't give him a year though, maybe a few weeks even, open wound infection with no antibiotic will likely take quite a toll on it's immune system. Andy he won't be able to escape or kick back against hungry predators as easily.

Also, question for you, what do you use to navigate? do you use GPS with Onxmaps by chance? I'm trying figure out what next tech device I should get.

I use onX. We went back up this weekend and didn't see him. Saw a bunch of mulie and whitetails. No elk other than this bull on my trail cam. Makes me happy to know they are still roaming that piece of state land and we didn't bump them off. Put two cell trail cams up there but I must not be getting a strong enough signal because I'm not getting any updates. Not going to head back up until it snows so we can track them better.

Hot on the trail of some elk again a week ago. Going up this weekend to check the trail cams since I can't seem to get them anywhere with some service.






My son is getting crazy good with his bow. This is number two in the last two weeks. All 25+ yards out.

They can be. We have 5 poisonous snakes where I live. Eastern diamondback rattlers, timber rattlers, coral snakes, copperheads and cottonmouths. Cottonmouths are the only ones that are super aggressive and will bite you for no reason but they tend to stay around water. Rattlesnakes let you know when your getting too close to them by rattling. Coral snakes and copperheads are both a lot smaller so the chances of stepping on one of those is pretty low. A girl who was on a date with my brother at our dad's house got bit on the foot after stepping on a rattlesnake cause we were all drunk. I haven't hunted archery season yet which is prob the only time we would have to deal with snakes. Rifle season is well into their hibernation time.

But we have grizzly bears, wolves and mountain lions that would all love to dine on you so I guess there is that.


Wolf season lasts until march 15th. I'd love to fill that tag. Coyotes are all over but you have to get pretty deep into the mountains to find wolves. They're huge. One less dog in the mountains is several extra elk.




It's obvious my honey hole has elk coming in and out of it frequently. And from what I can tell, not a lot of foot traffic. This could be super awesome when the elk start dropping their antlers. Found a small deer two point shed two weekends ago. Soon....

I did make a delicious venison stew in the slow cooker last night.

That sounds awesome, we've not gotten a coyote yet.
Hey, give the rabbit a try, who knows? I hear the skin comes off easier than squirrels, so there's that, lol.

That wolf looks badass! As far as big mammals we have a ton of hogs which are dangerous when they get big and some panthers. Technically, we aren't supposed to have black panthers but I've heard them my whole life and seen a couple with my own eyes. An old man told me once that we keep a low profile on the panther thing since they would be super endangered and it would screw up logging in the area if we officially had them. We have a chit ton of alligators in the same swamps we duck hunt but I've never heard of a person getting bitten by one. Cottonmouths in the swamp scare me more since I know of people who were bitten.

On Feb 11th I can start hunting hogs at night again which is a blast and then at the end of March Turkey season opens up
