The one miscer got it about right with "caveman mentality" response. Here's the full, blow-out evolutionary psychology answer:

* Certain parts of our brain didn't really evolve past the reptile/mammal split on the evolutionary tree. The cortex is actually referred to as our reptilian brain - it has a variety of functions like regulating your breathing & sweating, as well as sending various "impulse" signals.

* These impulse signals are based on our privative ancestral environtment, not the modern day city-suburban living

* At various points in homo sapien & previous hominid generations, there were near-extinction events, such as the Toba Event, where the world-wide population of humans (& previous species) dwindled all the way down to as few as 20,000 total. So there were prehistoric situations where humanity would suddenly lose 95% or more of its population.

* Humans/hominids that display "dark triad" values (basically self-survival at all costs) always had the highest survival chance during these events, or really any major disaster like floods or volcano eruptions.

* Female hominids & eventually female humans developed attachment impulses via their cortex to these "guaranteed survivors", as most of the time their survival also ensured the survival of their offspring. Remember, females of these species needed to depend on the males to survive, particularly during their pregnancy and when caring for the young. These were when females were most vulnerable. And remember, we're all descended from people that went through these events.


So fast forward to 2020. The cortex hasn't changed, only the rest of our brains. When women notice dark triad qualities in a man today, their cortex will send the same impulse signals to mate & desire him just as their primate ancestors. But the rest of the brain HAS evolved & adapted, and is capable of resisting these impulses. Except for sloots - their impulse control is poor and thus they act on their attraction for these types of men, of which maybe 99% won't kill them.
