I'm a big fan of Dave Ramsey's approach of "focus on paying off debt, to enable yourself to focus on an emergency fund, to enable yourself to focus on investments, to enable yourself to focus on a paid off house... etc."

One of the things that has never sat well with me though is his insistence for folks to make it "easier" on themselves to accomplish the above, payment wise / debt wise, by getting a car that costs like $3k or less. Sure there's some 2005 Honda Civics that fit the bill, but 15 years of age reduces any reliability and breeds accidents / damages in the carfax history report, or unexpected modifications. Odds are you buy a lemon and go deeper in the hole than intended.

I'm a fan of getting a car that's Certified Pre Owned from a dealer. These usually have little to nothing on accident/damage history, have passed numerous multi-point inspections, are old enough to take away some of the sting from buying something new, and new enough to have a bit of the manufacturer's/dealer's warranty remaining.

Its much harder buying used. Most people sell because problems.

I went through 10 sellers buying a work beater and ended up getting ripped off by a coworker.

I mean I didnt really get ripped off, but Im used to getting the best deals on whatever I buy
