Alot of English football fans say you should always support your local club but when I was at school all the kids supported the big teams like Liverpool, Man Utd, Arsenal etc so I got sucked into it

Not many kids support there local teams who's not that good or in lower divisions infact it's quite common with adults here aswell tbh.
I bet you are studying Sport at Uni, like Me OP yer???

Because from 2013 onwards I generally just lost interest in football altogether, I didn't even keep with any results or league tables regardless of who was playing better at the time.

Leeds are not a 'successful club' anymore atleast in the 21st century, maybe back in the 70's. winning the championship isn't that big of an achievement or a major trophy compared to the prem, FA cup or champions league.

I think it's best to support your local club, but considering the amount of clubs there are - I don't know how deep you Englanders get into it. Like...if you're from Sheffield should you support Sheffield F.C., Sheffield Wednesday or Sheffield United? I guess considering the gap in competition, it's acceptable to support Wednesday or United and then F.C. I don't have this problem since I'm from the states, but I used to be a big time Barca supporter, lmao. Now I follow Newcastle more because shared trauma brings you closer together.

You'll probably get some stick if someone finds out you used to support Man U when you're from Yorkshire. FIFA says Yorkshire is the birthplace of football man.

It depends on where you live usually, if you live in a rural part of England where there's no decent football team then many will just support the big clubs even if they've never been to Manchester or Liverpool.

Those who live in Sheffield will generally have more local fans that support Sheff Utd or Wednesday then let's say someone who lives in a place like Cornwall with no major team.

But even then you get people who live in a city known for decent teams yet still support someone else. You get fans from London that support Man Utd even though there local team is West Ham etc.

But yeah the hardcore English football fans say you should always support your closest local club till you die, or at the very minimum support a team thats not close to you but atleast stick with one team for life.

Yes. Outside of my local team, I used to support man utd cos it was the biggest team in the North, but I was a beckham nut hugger & when he went to Real Madrid I followed & developed a deep hatred for Man Utd.

That's srsly interesting. I like the thought of supporting your closest club regardless, really harkens back to that diehard club loyalty that I found fascinating in English football. And maybe someday, your club will rise and it'll be epic.

That said, I think you can support a League 2 side and still have a premier league team you enjoy watching, but will never have the same bond with as your local club. Back when Newcastle were doing well around 2011-2013 I knew a few neutrals who enjoyed watching all their matches.

Yeah many will go watch there local league 2 team yet still support a Premier league club.

Generally teams like Man Utd, Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea and only recently Man City will have fans from all over England, well pretty much the entire world. Leeds do too aswell but to a smaller extent because of there history of being one of the top dogs in back in the 70's and 80's.

However teams like Wolves, West Brom etc usually only have local support from fans who live in the city/town or nearby.

It started cos of the years old "War Of The Roses" between Lancashire and Yorkshire - when Manchester WAS in Lancashire ... then esculated through the Billy Bremner Days ande Leeds being "hard as nails" and the various players moved like I think Joe Jordan, Dennis Irwin ...


Then it exploded with Guys like Eric Cantona, Alan smith and Rio fredinand in the last 20-30 years moving to Manchester as well as others like Gordan Strachan taking the Oposite Route, cos Fergie did'ntr rate ghim. No doubt Man U tried to go after Guys like Nigel Martyn too, then add to that leeds got quite a few Ex-Liverpool Guys in Fowler and Matteo to spice it all up more!!

You sound like you're taking pro sports way too seriously. You might catch a little crap from people who are completely obsessed with if if you bring it up, but that's about it.

Also, "supporting" the "local" team is never a big deal. So stop thinking about it so much and just do whatever.
