Jumping adds a little to squatting
Pull ups adds a little to rowing
Deadlifting adds a little to being able to carry objects while walking
People think things like walking, running, jumping ect are not skills because its so basic. But its a skill with a similar skill ceiling as a squat or a deadlift to do perfectly.
If you take two genetically identical twins and you have
#1 Only do jumps
#2 Only do squats
The obvious result will be that 1 is better at jumps and 2 is better at squats.
Though what happens when #1 continues to only do jumps, while #2 then transitions to ALSO only do jumps.
You will probably see that #2 potentially gets very close if not equal to #1 in terms of jumps, while also squatting more.
You see this happen a lot with bodybuilders moving to powerlifting and doing very well. THeir muscular capacity is so high and they are already pretty strong (just not PL strong) that they get really good really quick in PLing.
The same can be said for footballers and rugby players. Even if you disregard that these athletes already bench often, they are training their muscles intensely through the sport itself for 6+ hours a week. If you spent 6 hours a week with a coach in the gym and had good nutritional planning you would probably be stronger, but they would be more athletic.

Yeah. I feel like real life strength is much more important than gym strength. Also, I think that real life strength can’t be improved by lifting weights conventionally.
It’s frustrating how I get thrown around by people that never go to the gym or even people that are short and skinny.

I like bodyweight training (more specifically weighted bodyweight training), but I'd still say weightlifting still makes you stronger. Yes, it does train you for a specific plane of movement, but overall your nerves are still getting stronger even for other movements.
I managed to win an arm-wrestling contest with a friend by weight training, and you know there's a different movement you've got to do than using weights.
I still like this post though, maybe misc is getting better.

Matt Hughes was stronger then every single ufc fighter he faced. They all said he was the strongest they have ever faced. And he barley lifted weights but worked the farm for years
Farm strength>weight strength all day

Its a VERY SPECIFIC movement and you only get stronger on the squat or bench press what have you.

2002 join date, yet OP this is you:

You just figured out that strength is specific LOL. If you want to get good at sumo wrestling (chit example btw) you need to do more sumo training.
OP did you know that water is wet?

You must think you’re a tough guy. You have the reach advantage sure, but I outweigh you by 50lbs and soon I’ll be up to 315lbs after this bulk. I literally have the size and strength advantage. As soon as I charge at you and put you on your back there’s absolutely nothing you could do but suffocate under my weight.

there is some truth to this. specifically training for a given movement pattern is going to make you better at that movement than generic weight lifting. there is a neurological component that gets trained through specificity that doesn't get trained through general weight lifting. this is not to say that weight lifting makes you weaker, but rather practicing general strength and specific movement is optimal for sport.

I don’t think I’m a tough guy, I know it, I was raised to be in one of the hardest places in the country being the wrong skin color. You don’t outweigh me, not even close and I’ve got a foot in height on you not to mention I bench twice what you weigh and have posted vids here proving as much. Lifting weights could make you weaker if you never gave yourself adequate rest to recover.
If you hit chest everyday 3x a day you could probably do enough damage to get weaker.
If you're not retarted and give your body an adequate amount of rest lifting won't make you weaker (and with enough stimulus you will obviously get stronger whether through neural adaptation or an increase in muscle mass).

Yes lifting weights get you strong IN THAT movement, but thats the argument here - lifting a weight is useless strength
We have been told it transfers well to other movements but it doesnt!
