In basketball and soccer you can't even breathe on someone without a foul being called. Plus the insane amount of flopping is ridiculous.

This is why NFL will always be king. It's one of the few sports in which you can blow someone the fuk up and everyone in the crowd goes crazy. Each and every game is like an event because of how short the season is.

Soccer is just 1 variant of a common sport (i.e. field layout, basic rules, continual play, etc.)

- Soccer you play on grass and you move the ball by kicking it.
- Hockey is soccer played on ice and you move the ball (puck) by pushing it with a stick.
- Field hockey is hockey, but played on grass.
- Lacrosse is soccer, but you move the ball by carrying it in a net on a stick.
- Basketball is soccer played on wood floors, but you move the ball by dribbling it and shoot with your hands.
- Polo is field hockey on horseback.
- Water polo is soccer in a swimming pool.

Soccer isn't as popular here because we have all of those other similar sports. In places where soccer is popular, those other sports don't exist or are so prohibitively expensive that few can play them.

I think the talent level of the MLS would rise significantly if the sport were popular in America. Not many Americans aspire to be professional soccer players because it's not lucrative or even popular enough here. More A-level athletes would try to be soccer players in the US if they thought it was important/lucrative enough

I'll give you a serious answer. The reason why it is not popular in the U.S. is because it's a club sport. In order to really get good and get exposure, you must play in soccer clubs. This of course means lots of money. It is very expensive. This is why you only see white dudes that come from money play soccer. In other countries, soccer is very popular in poor countries like Brazil. Over there is it the opposite. They invest in players and pay for everything. They train the kid for years like a pro. Guys like Neymar, Messi, and Ronaldo came from poor families.

TL;DR
The U.S. does not invest in its own players like other countries do.

The USA used to be one of the best nations at soccer. Before huge TV contracts for professional athletics, the USA did fine in international soccer competitions. However, once TV started deciding which sports leagues would get rich (and by extension which athletes would get rich), the disparity between the USA and Europe began. Soccer wasn't a televised sport here, so our best athletes weren't attracted to it. In Europe, it was. Their best athletes became soccer players. Except for the cold countries, which went the ice hockey route. It's as simple as that. Even the NFL was a minor league in the USA until the 1958 overtime championship game was televised. TV ultimately decided which sports would become our main sports by picking the ones they'd broadcast and signing huge TV rights deals with them. If soccer had the drama of the 1958 overtime championship game and was shown on TV back then, we could have become a soccer country. Fortunately we didn't.

Yeah the mainstream popularity is basically what it comes down to. It makes sense how TV played a role in what became popular. Why football became big on TV probably had to do with American exceptionalist sentiments in an era where war was more common. Also the violence of football probably helped it's popularity because Americans have always been bloodthirsty since the country's conception

Brb choosing to show on TV in post WW2 America a sport which was created outside of the US or an American-made sport which has violence. Pretty obvious which was chosen and why
