My current house has a schitty ambiance fireplace. Looks pretty, doesn't heat for schit. My childhood home had one of those wood burning fireplaces in our basement. That was our primary source of heat along with electric. Nothing like coming in from outside and smelling that new fire going. Sit in front of it all warm and schit drying my mits and hat, having a hot chocolate. 1990s of peace.
*Look at reflection in car window and flex every time crew*
*Use half the roll to wipe after a poo crew*
*Fart in the gym and blame rotten smell on faulty ventilation crew*
*Fart at home and blame it on the dog crew*
*Watch neutron-star density poop mock me as water flushes around it and it stays put crew*
*Drive 2 minutes in the summer and back of shirt gets completely wet crew*
*Coffee black as midnight on a moonless night crew*

I've always wondered how you combat the smoke and (heavy) smell of the wood burning besides opening a window when it first starts.

I'm looking to build a tiny home or cabin with a wood stove as primary heat, and at least electric heat as backup (maybe nat gas or propane too, depending on budget).

Works too as long as the chimney is strong enough. Mine's not very strong/high so I'm glad I have outside air.

Strong chimney, good seal when door is closed, combustion air from outside. And you got to build the fire so that it gets hot enough quickly.
