Imagine having an advanced degree in finance from a top university but getting mogged by some guy with barely any education takes your job because he just has good gut instincts on which stocks and companies to buy. Think about how all those well educated scientist were, and then some guy that couldn't even comb his hair and was regarded as retarded most of his life comes and changes the world (Einstein)
All over the country, lackluster, semi dumb but good at school idiots get themselves in massive debt thinking that if they pay enough, and go to the right school, they will be the best, and then they end up not being able to get or keep a good job in which they studied. It's talent.

1. I tried really hard to like BJJ. I went in thinking I would enjoy it and that I was basically gonna start from scratch with a wrestling background to have a small head start with knowing positioning on some level. That was all true. But I legit hated it. Idk why. I was a very technical wrestler and wasn’t always the stronger/faster one on the mat. Perfect fit for BJJ, right? Nope. I was bored sh!tless. Part of it was that fukking gi. It annoyed me to be grabbing the other guy’s gi and him grabbing mine. Tried no-gi. Still didn’t like it. Way too technical for me and i got no enjoyment out of constantly hand-fighting, moving around in odd positions on the mat. It just flat out sucked. With wrestling there’s less grey areas. You execute your takedown in as quick of a burst as you got, and you get your two points. BJJ’s pace was nothing like that. Long story short, I just didn’t care for it.
2. I’m not so sure why wrestling is such a good base for MMA. Because BJJ guys basically know wrestling and then how to tap you out. Wrestling is mainly about control and nothing further. A wrestler isn’t gonna tap out a jiu jitsu guy if they’re both equal at their martial art. I think wrestling is a solid base because of the culture of a high school/college wrestling room. They’re in basically every school in America and there’s just a different toughness you get with wrestling than you do a BJJ room. You’re cutting weight all the time, over-training, barely eating, etc. It’s the physical discipline and explosiveness that wrestling requires that makes them tough. More so than the technique of wrestling being superior to BJJ.

I would LOVE to find a wrestling camp/club/gym but they basically dont exist for adults outside of some of it being folded into a general MMA gym. I actually think Greco-Roman/Freestyle might even be better for self defense than BJJ provided you are physically fit.

BJJ is for nerds that used to get stuffed into lockers in high school. It was their way to get back at the bigger bullies who abused them.
"Size doesn't matter! I've got my ninja BJJ skills!"
Then they find out that size is everything in combat sports.

This discussion was had awhile ago (and I know im veering off topic a bit) and a miscer made a great point that its probably better for the average person to be strong and physically fit rather than good at BJJ. Average person cannot fight and its probably more useful to just be stronger than other people than more technical.
This is all from a self defense standpoint of course.

Derrick Lewis is a BJJ blue belt. Not an expert, but enough to incorporate it into his game to defend against it. We didn’t see much of it but Ngannou displayed some nice wrestling last night.
I do agree that BJJ has been marketed into something it really isn’t though. It has chubby middle managers thinking they’re Jason Bourne. It’s no accident that there wasn’t a wrestler up against Royce in the first ufc events, or that the sumo went up against a dangerous striker before getting a chance at him either. The whole thing as carefully planned advert for Gracie BJJ. But be that as it may, it is an incredible martial art. Who in the UFC, excluding wrestlers, doesn’t at least know a little bit of it, out of pure necessity?

And let’s be completely honest here. Anyone who got sold the lie they will turn into Jason Bourne with enough training normally gets that illusion squeezed and smashed out of them very quickly at any real gym.
Anyone with a grain of intelligence wouldn’t stick around a McDojo for longer then a week (no idea why op thought training at a mcdojo steamrolling cream puffs for months was a good idea)

BJJ is a waste of time over the basics. 2-3 months max.
Beyond that is diminishing returns. the more you roll, the worse you become as a fighter. it's pure autism at that point.

Eh in the grappling world, Gordon Ryan is wrecking grapplers from all styles, and Goron Ryan does bjj. Anyone from DDS would mess up a grappler of another style outside of bjj.

So the lack of earning the next belt would hinder a wrestling room from making money. But i still love the idea and wonder if they’d work out if you tried opening up a wrestling room with a monthly fee. It would probably be mostly has-beens like me who miss the sport and wanna continue it to stay in shape. I wrestled in freestyle and greco roman tournaments by myself in the offseason. Felt good showing up to the mat with no coaches in your corner and then beating the guy who has his coaches, family, and a bunch of his friends/relatives watching. Damn it where did the time go?I also wrestled in HS (though I was nothing special). I 100% agree with you. Didnt like BJJ all that much.

I got my start at an MMA gym during the peak of the JUST BLEED era. We would get juice heads left and right that for some reason would want to talk chit, just like OP. At first, my coach (a hot head from Brazil) would absolutely DESTROY anyone that wanted a shot. Like talking either humiliated to the point they scurried out of the gym or left with a limp. But then he started turning us loose on them. I was 6 months in, 155lbs, and could pick apart 9/10 people no matter the size or strength. The other 10%, I just had to get them to gas which would take a couple minutes at best, and then they would typically just give up lol.
Almost nobody in here has any room to talk, considering how few have legitimately trained or even been in a non school yard brawl. I, on the other hand, have trained and competed on the highest levels, and been in several scraps where I utilized Jiu jitsu to finish each situation.
But please, keep those arm chair quarter back opinions coming. It’s hilarious the level of cope that comes from these discussions. It’s like a tradie talking chit to an attorney for wasting money on education lol
