We're talking about the general U.S population here who does not have a good reputation at learning another language., let alone have a full conversation in a foreign language.

I've made multiple long distance roadtrips across the US mostly to visit the nice national parks and camp over there. I've been to over a dozen US states and I would usually ask for directions when lost on spanish (on purpose just to gauge the reactions) I was pleasently surprised that lots of people spoke spanish and were generally very nice and helpful.
Even on "red" states like Arizona and Nevada where one could expect the sterotipical rude/racist behaviour people where nice and helpful and could comunicate in spanish, my travels where mostly base around the west-coast and the southwest so theres lots of spanish influence still there
