Diesel is the only real choice. Here's why:
-More torque.
-Smoother operation when towing.
-Less strain/wear and tear on the engine from towing.
-More MPG over distance.
-Better resale over time/truck maintains its value much better. That 10+ more upfront makes a huge difference in 10+ years.
-Trucks may be rated to tow X amount of weight. But if your putting a truck/engine at its limit its just a lot harsher on it. You're more likely to have breakdowns, maintenance issues, etc.

Your situation is probably different for a few reasons.
1. You're in the frozen North. When it comes to gas vs diesel gas will edge out.
2. You're operating a business that's likely brutal on your trucks. You run them into the ground, then get another. Am I right? Gas is more economical in your situation I'm sure.
3. Availability. I have no doubt gasoline and gas trucks are far more available in your area. I've been up North in a diesel. I've been through smaller towns that don't even sell diesel. Gotta stay tanked up on the highway.



Yes, a gasoline truck is capable of towing. But its the inferior choice in the lower 48. By far. There is a reason why larger/heavier duty trucks only come in diesel. As far as that. Where I live you can't even buy a F350/3500 class truck in gasoline off the lot. There is literally no market for them. If you wanted one you'd have to order one through a dealership.



When I was 18-20 I made my living towing stuff in my F250 (Diesel). Buddy of mine briefly tried it with a gas F250. He ended up burning up the motor and he switched to diesel. We don't even have mountains here but the performance difference was quite obvious.

Also I towed campers/travel trailers as a sub-contractor for FEMA after a hurricane. The little standard 28-32ft campers. No fifth wheel. Massive difference in power pulling them with a diesel F250 and when I drove someones gas F150 with one.

How did you make money using your truck for towing? I'd like to get a loan on a decent truck to get into it.

Just a side note here. Are we forgetting how problematic and unreliable the emissions systems are on diesels?
