Probably not just snakes but all of the things that got killed in the fires last year. Mice can breed like crazy so it makes sense their population would take off in 18 months of significantly reduced predator populations.

Not fires, but the drought. We had a drought for a couple of years, which decimated predator numbers.

When the rains came and the harvest picked up again, mice bred like crazy (more food) but predator numbers usually take longer to catch up.

I'm in Central West NSW, right in the middle of it and in town. Have seen a few dead ones around the streets and can hear them sometimes in the ceiling cavity, but apart from that not much. I know some people who live just out of town have had a whole heap of them.
