The point of marriage is commitment. Having someone that will always have your back.

Obviously lots of marriages fall short, but showing commitment is the core purpose. Sometimes people will also say that you can be just has committed without marriage. I won't argue that many people who aren't married are more committed to a partner than many who are but, traditionally, marriage is the way two people show commitment.

Stability is a natural by-product of that commitment, and generally provides a lot of social benefits. (kids, earnings, etc.)

would marry to build a family (kids)

not interested in having kids outside of wedlock even though that is more common these days

not a big financial incentive considering I out-earn my future wife by 3x minimum but I guess there's risks with everything in life... choose carefully

Of course marriage isn't "necessary" to have kids or be in a relationship. It's a tradition and it makes people feel more connected to their partner.

What is the purpose of celebrating a birthday? What is the purpose of rooting for your favorite sports team?

Most of the things we do in life/society are not "necessary" we do them because we find value in them in one way or the other.

Don't like baseball? Don't watch the games. Don't believe in marriage? Don't get married. Different strokes.

Basically this isn't true. I have anecdotal evidence that a commitment ceremony without the legal blessing of the government is good enough for a conservative woman WAAAY above your social standing, appearance and IQ. You're not exactly an authority on the subject with your failed attempt at a marriage. That is if you're actually a woman and not a horribly written troll character by wincel.

I would go out and say that not only do you not need legal marriage, you can even do without a commitment ceremony. Tbh I don't need you telling me I have only two options. Being mentally ill, your opinion is worthless and isn't based in reality. You spend way too much time on the internet. Also your moral compass has been time and again exposed as barely functional and downright degenerate. You admit that you're a mercantile whore would marry someone only for their money, so there's no sense in talking with you, as I'm not a psychiatrist and don't even have that academic interest in people like you.

What do you mean by unofficial? In my country(Orthodox Christian) you can get married in a church(as long as you've been baptized) and it is pretty official. Here we have what's called a "church marriage" which is not legally binding but still taken very seriously and a "civil marriage" which is basically your contract with the government. You can do one without the other or you can do both.

Oh I'm talking about American girls. Not sure about how other countries work but in America, it would literally put all the leverage in the man's hands (assuming hes the provider). The broad would have to be braindead to stay home to be a trad wife with 0 assurances. There are cohabitation laws in some states that would probably protect her though I'm no expert

This. The purpose of marriage is to build a family. A husband and wife. A home. Kids. Etc.

Obviously if you want a traditional life and to someday be the patriarch of a family marriage is required.

Statistically married people are far more successful and build a far wealthier/better life. Most likely because when you have two people working together towards a common goal. You'll outperform one person working alone. Obviously when they are at odds are neither person is driven its a roadblock.

For the people that believe its a good idea to get married to have a consistent/frequent sex partner that's stupid. If your not able to consistently and easily have sex when your single. You won't constantly and easily have sex when your married. A lot of women lose respect/desire for their husband once they are married. Dudes get too complacent.

Pretty much this. There's no "point" really, it's just a custom/tradition that folks partake in. There are financial benefits usually. Source: Married over 12 years

I'm sure there is data somewhere comparing official vs unofficial marriages, but I don't have it. Just guessing, I would predict that official marriages last longer on average. Length is only one measure of stability, but it's a big one.

I would also agree that an unwillingness to officially marry would eliminate most of your options for traditional women. The world's a big place and I'm sure there are some women that are traditional in every way but their expectations for marriage, but probably not that many. It's also possible that Silence and I are showing our age. Not sure how old GayCumLord is, but Silence is upper 40's (unless she turned 50) and I'm lower 40's. Maybe the young woman today see things differently. My daughters will be raised to expect marriage, as I believe that is in their best interest.

Your tone in your posts have changed in the last week or so. Maybe you are having fun with an alter ego which is not aligned to the reasons why you stated you were on here in the first place, which is giving young kids real perspective. So at this point, are you on an internet forum babbling jokes and memes like the rest of them?

I chose to raise a family unit with a woman that held old fashion values. With that came marriage (old fashion values)
Its defintiely social programming, but it is a means to an end.

This. It's a tradition. If you want a traditional long term relationship, this is the next step. If you want a more modern, progressive type of thing, just do that.

You can raise a family and be committed without getting married sure, but there's something to be said about making it official. You can say I want to be with you forever till the cows come home, but marriage is the thing used to show 100% commitment on paper. You trust and love her so much that you want to combine everything you have and be one unit. It's about two people becoming this one family that share their lives, goals, children, money, everything.

That's what it's really about. If you don't want to do it, don't. Nobody will force you, but these are the reasons people do it even though they don't really have to.
I'm back, bitches!

Your neighbor has a farm and you have a farm. Through marriage you unite both farms and get a bigger farm. I thought this was common knowledge.

Creating a setting where you and your SO are pushed to work together for the sake of the family, for better or worse. No matter what happens you are supposed to have each others' backs and devote yourself to the betterment of your family. Creating external obligations for yourself because at the end of the day your family will be better by most all metrics than your own selfish endeavors and feelings. If you're going to have kids it's best to do it with both parents in the picture and have them get along.

Although these days there is no longer any social stigma against divorce so your chances of finding someone else -- especially a woman -- who believes in this way is very slim. If you can find someone who wants to devote themselves to a family I say it's better to go that route than devote yourself to hedonism and trying to carve an island of a life for yourself.
