700k house...sheeesh. Keeping up with the Joneses is tough these days. Could get the same quality house a 30-45 minute commute to work and save 350k.

At least in the area I live in, there was definitely a trend of high paying jobs moving closer and closer together towards each other in the core parts of the metro. Tech jobs in the suburbs would often move offices into the city, or just shrink or close
This actually may be the primary reason why I mentioned I grew up with a lifestyle described in the OP even though our family didn't make much; we lived in the outskirts of the metro. Now I have to live in the core. Things are WAY more expensive here. 700k home vs 250k out there for example

Inb4 OP you don't have to have kids or do that stuff. Yes, but thats not a middle class family lifestyle. Sure I can choose to be single with no kids, not take vacations, hardly eat out, and drive a 1000 dollar 20 year old car, but thats not the lifestyle I'm talking about.

The only state where housing is cheap near the city is Oklahoma (liberals only argument against living here is "it's Oklahoma")
Edit: and Texas, and I'm sure other states I forgot to mention.
Skip SUV buy new Corolla or Civic for $20,000 less, or just get multiple used cars
My vacations as a kid only included Las Vegas at the hotels which luckily wasn't $500 per night. San Francisco and Sacramento in cheapo motels.
I legit though going to McDonald's as a kid was "fancy" food. My parent's mostly just cooked Mexican food for us.
Instead of gay iPhones, buy Pixel (or anything else for that matter), mine was $300. I will never own a chit iPhone. I remember my old smart phone from 2011, I owned until 2014, then I bought a new updated one that I replaced for a new one in 2019
The rest at the bottom is 100% correct.
If you live in a liberal state, you do have options at least. Get married, work for lots of years, then move and pump out kids after saving a lot of money (enough to buy house).
It's stupid, because you have liberals claiming that the high taxes are what's causing higher wages. Then you look at other cheaper states, and they pay exactly the same. The only difference is you can't be a fat piece of chit (government health insurance options) and you can't be a welfare parasite (have to have in demand skills). Only some jobs pay more in the cities of California, such as Nursing and Big Tech.

There are so many choices people can make to live below their means and not feel stressed over money. Most people just make the wrong choices and it comes from thinking they deserve the biggest and best of everything. These people create their own slavery to their bills and it's sad. It's unfortunate how just a couple of unnecessarily large purchases can set a person into a life of wage slavery......

I think the meme of CEO 10k/day comes from the idea among men that money makes you more of a man. The ability to flaunt wealth and attract shallow women to me is not something a greater man does. Some are just born into wealth or high paying job opportunities.
The only wealthy people I've ever deeply respected are guys like Chuck Feeney who built their fortune themselves and then gave it all away in order to help people. Not even like pledging it or leaving it tied it up in a political foundation, dude just straight up gave it away and lifted Ireland out of poverty.

Since then I make more money, live in a slightly better area but drive my 6 year old car with 250k miles on it.
I buy new clothes only for special occasions.
I spend most of my money on food or travel and even that is not that crazy high.
What the op describes sounds like keeping up with the Jones’.

^^ I think most of y'all are missing the point of the thread.
It's not that you have to live like this, I even addresses that in the 2nd to last part of the OP, you can choose not to, but then you aren't living the lifestyle outlined in the OP.
The point of the thread is to just LOL at how expensive the outlined lifestyle is, and how people afford it.
Even still, some of these costs aren't as unreasonable as some of you seem to think. If you are a decently paid white collar worker, you will likely have to spend around that much on a home (and that much when you go out to eat, however frequent that may be), because you don't have the luxury of living in a cheaper area because thats not where your jobs are.

Full size suvs are insane. See so many of them. 80k suburbans driving around. You need to have like 300k household income but yet I see almost every other car on the street is a suburban/tahoe or similar.

Salaries are nearly half of an equivalent american's in my industry, yet you have more taxes and have to pay much more for housing and just about everything else. Except for healthcare, but your employer would take care of that here too.

70k salary is enough to have a 2 story house in a safe area with a big yard, solid car, and still save a good amount of money
People waste money on “luxury” car brands, pointless home renovations, not shopping around, eating out half the week, etc.
People are either good with money or they aren’t. Whether they make 70k, or 200k, they would find a way to spend it all

But from your 2 story house, are there jobs which pay 200k (like software eng) within a reasonable (< 45min) commuting distance?
In the metro I live, a home which you can afford on a 70k salary (especially one with big yard and safe area) is not within reasonable commuting distance to high paying jobs

Legit I’m saving up while here in goofy ass Bay Area, CA. Living frugal, but going to have a fat ass down payment for a real middle class American dream house in the Midwest.
BRB $400k homes in Ohio or Michigan (4-5 bed / 3-4 bath 2800-3000sqft house, with garage, basement, and roughly 1/4 to 1/3 acre of land) is like a $1.2M home in S. California and nearly a $2M home in the Bay Area, and that’s a home with a tiny chitty non-existent prison cell of a backyard.

Socialism has allowed people to live way above their means. People no longer save, have a retirement... they went to retire and just live on Medicaid and Social Security.
This is why socialism weakens society. No one plans for tragedy anymore and they expect the rest of us to bail them out. Socialism, like the totalitarian state, is the product of society simply no longer wanting to take responsibility

Sometimes I look around other places with cheaper homes and start drooling, like how much home you can get for 500k in WI. But then I look and see there's not many jobs I could have there. Maybe I could retire there one day
Bay area's housing market is on another dimension
The price is high because there is an assumption that it will keep increasing at a high rate.
Because even if you spend 2M on a home there, if you can sell it for 2.5M a couple years later, it didn't actually cost you much.
It's effectively speculation built into the pricing

Read an article once where two lawyers were living paycheck to paycheck with the only savings being their house. 400k income combined, but million dollar mortgage, two cars, two kids in private school and camps/activities, one major vacation a year and a cottage they had to maintain that doubled as a ski chalet.
People spend up to whatever their means dictate and usually a bit over.

$700k in Michigan easily gives you a comfortable size home with lake view, as in nice back yard with direct access to the lake with a dock (for boats).
