Tried watching this a few years back when one of the local stations ran it during the Christmas season, and holy crap was it bad. I think I was 3 hours in and nothing was still happening. Granted, TV, commercials stretch it out, but still. And the music was incompetent. And I don't mean I simply didn't like it. The title song for instance, sounded like they gave Julie Andrews the one famous line on the day of the shoot and told her to just make up the rest without giving her any time to think about it. The only song that had any sort of cadence to it was that annoying one the two teens sang to each other. "I am 16 going on 17..." but it was like a 12-year old wrote the lyrics. I had to give up on the whole thing.


Some ideas on older movies that probably don't get much attention these days...
Cimarron - one of those slice of life movies I wouldn't think would be interesting, but you get hooked and can't turn it off.

Big Hand for the Little Lady - About a poker game set in the old west. Funny, and it has a twist ending you wouldn't expect from a 60s film.

Seven Alone - A rosy, fictionalized account of the Sager children. Real life had a far more tragic outcome then the movie, but the film was still good.

Little House on the Prairie - The pilot movie put out before the TV show was an adaptation of Laura Wilder's first book. Her daughter Rose was a famous Libertarian - she was friends with Ayn Rand. When she died, the Little House franchise was left to another libertarian friend who was the one who brought it to TV. While you can see libertarianism all throughout the show if you look for it, the ideology was on full display in that movie. The Ingalls received a handout (their land grant) from the government. Charles spends the movie working hard, making a life for his family. Despite setbacks, he always gets back up and works hard to recover from them. But in the end, because he took that handout, the government comes back and completely screws him over just when things are starting to finally go right for him. The whole lesson of the movie was "don't trust the government."
