5 percent on the dot. And Powell is committed to letting this thing burn.

Google "Fed reverse repo". Banks just gave half a trillion dollars BACK to the Fed this week. They have nowhere to invest it, it returns 0 interest, and that cash counts as a liability on their books. So they literally just gave the last 4 MONTHS of QE back to JPow. And Powell continues to print more, even though he knows it's just going to be given back later, because if he stops printing the whole market panics and tanks.

Powell thinks he can keep printing until 2023, but I don't see this shell game lasting that long. Asset markets (what he claims to be stimulating) are grossly overweight and stalled out, inflation is chewing up real gains, and more stimmy isn't having any effect. Sooner or later, he's got to bite the bullet and raise rates and just let the asset correction happen. I think he wants to wait for employment to improve before setting off a stock market crash, but inflation rekking the average consoomer while he waits might force his hand.

This isn't QE. This is straight money printing that's happening. Far worse than QE.

Really? One limits stimulus to lenders, the other one literally gave virtually every adult in the USA straight cash.

You realize the lenders get the money back, right? That's a hair different than cutting you a cheque.

You could make the exact same argument about getting cut a check. People are just going to go spend it and give it to someone else.

Literally is nothing but flooding the economy with money in either case.

One of these benefits the wealthy.

The other benefits the wealthy.

If you thinking giving some poorcel $4000 in printed cash is actually helping them in the long run, you'd be so wrong. Inflation pisses that $4000 down the drain over the long run in real terms.

Poorcel wages change insignificantly over the years. Inflation erodes the spending power of the little amount of money they make.

To put it into perspective, wages for poorcells hovered around $7-$10 twenty fuarking years ago. It's around $10-$12 today. Meanwhile, rents were $400-$600. Today, those same rents are $900-$1300. Printing money is never a good long term strategy, but our Fed can't seem to get enough of it.

When QE gets injected into the system, banks have extra liquidity to make loans and "grow" businesses that are addicted to the low rates. Debtors pay off their loans to the bank, and the Fed essentially erases the bonds they purchased that the treasury should pay off, but don't, which is actually a significant proportion of total bonds (~50% were owned by the fed in 2016). The result is billions of dollars now circulating in the economy paid for by devaluing the USD.

A healthy economy would be making loans off of savings created by productivity and sound fiscal policy. Debtors pay off their loans, the bank takes profit from the interest, and depositors earn a share of that interest on their savings. CPI does not increase and we don't have massive debt bubbles, but politicians won't be able to brag about how much they are helping.

Jfl at when everyone gets their annual raise next year and itโ€™s only 3% when inflation yoy is at 8%.

And this is why boys and girls why there needs to be a law that ties everyoneโ€™s wage to inflation. A true raise is inflation% + merit increase%.

What this does, is promote job hopping. Unless significant bonuses or annual raises are given, the employee will be forced to hop to another job to keep getting paid market rate.

This can be very problematic for companies if they donโ€™t have a leadership bench built and a way to keep those high potential employees from leaving.

Lets not act like crony capitalism isnt an issue with this too, they stifle competition with government sanctioned monopolies (regulations). When a company makes a mistake they look to john Q public to foot the bill while they skate away with profits over the years. Plenty enough blame to go around and some directed at corporations is justified. This is coming from a free market libertarian.

The corporation's job is to make money, not ensure competitive market conditions. Crony Capitalism is purely the fault of government.

Inflation is subtle way to keep people enslaved and working forever

Without inflation someone could easily work hard for 10-20 years put away a million and retire
With inflation that million is worth less and less every second

They go hand in hand. Megacorps grease politician's elbows with donations and overcompensated "advisor" roles once they live office in exchange for political benefits. Both parties are in the wrong here so we should wrek em both

ITT Everyone blames politicians but continues to vote for candidates that put corporate interests over the public. The Tax Cut and Jobs Act is a huge win for corporate interests and the majority of the MISC is right leaning.

It's due to crony capitalism.

True capitalism promotes fair and free competition and allows the market to rule.

We have crony capitalism in this country, where politicians allow monopolies to exist, stifle competition through asinine laws, enforce gatekeeper regulations(FCC is one of the worst offenders), give select companies handouts(mainly banks), and various other things.

Let's not act like the corporations here are not to blame as well. Blaming the nature of corporations is living in an idealistic world where people are not responsible for their actions but a victim of their environment. That's no better than liberal philosophies. While it's not their job ensure fair competition, bribing politicians or lobbying for unfair competition in the name of their own profit should never be acceptable behavior, yet it goes on frequently in the name of "capitalism".
