No need to prepare beyond what's reasonable. If you are a "prepper" you are one of the first that will have their sh!t stolen.

You need a network of people you trust and you need to have skills that are valuable to a community in a survival situation, eg. Basic working knowledge of electronics/radio equipment, combustion engines, agriculture, animal husbandry, basic medicine/first aid, carpentry, security/combat, and brewing/distillation.

Anyone you don't trust is an immediate threat. Survival is 0-100, on/off, until things levelout. And even then you need to assume strangers want what you have and will kill to take it.

Finally, as some have already alluded, the weak will be killed or all but enslaved early on. The west is full of weak people. Survival is all about will and skill.

Disagree on the ammo. If chit goes downhill to the point that you're shooting people without police then responding, things are probably staying bad for a while. Which means you probably need to take things like hunting for food into consideration. You also have possible entered the normally unthinkable scenario of shooting at threats while they are still too far away to hit simply as a deterrent.

Truth is, if you're in a city, you're going to be toast in a true apocalyptic emergency though. People way out in the burbs with sufficient supplies and the ability to stay low key might be okay.
