Not sure. But I remember guys in wrestling would play "Sad But True" when we'd work out. I never understood what he was saying and I remember them talking about a guy who had graduated that was sure the lyrics were "Sand Patrol" and they mocked him endlessly and I was glad I didn't speak up.

The song was initially about a child’s death inside its crib. Then bob rock and lars thought it was too uncomfortable and asked james to rewrite.

So he wrote some bullchit nonsense instead. Here’s his DIRECT quote about new lyrics (srs):

“You know when you wake up with that **** in your eye? That's supposedly been put in there by the sandman to make you dream. So the guy in the song tells this little kid that and he kinda freaks.”
