I only watch the freestyle wrestling and if you knew how stacked the USA olympic trials is you would definitely be impressed.
IMO, freestyle olympic trials in USA has the highest level of competition in combat sports.

The training is nothing, the will is everything. The will to act.

Things you can’t control mean an awful lot in life and water is wet.
Can’t remember the exact source (Freakononics, maybe?), but a statistically high amount of pro athletes are born in the first part of the year - logic behind that is, that being physically more developed means a lot during childhood and thus, they get into better programs, they get more practice, etc.
That being said, regarding sports like bobsled, archery and other (super) niche sports, it is obviously not as impressive as world class runners or footballers.

Additionally, enough talent needs to participate in those indoor leagues for it to be beneficial. That generally doesn't exist, which means joining a travel team. That adds hours of driving and hotel costs.

I looked into 2man bobsled for me and my lil bro to represent a South American team. I basically learned in addition to living near a track (there are like 3 in all of the americas north and south) you also need to compete in global events to earn enough points to be ranked, travel, bring your equipment (sled (sometimes several sleds, practice sled, race sled)) all of which would cost well into the tens/hundreds of thousands just to qualify.

I do enjoy wrestling, track, olympic lifting, boxing, judo, tennis. Note I mention a lot of combat sports because of the sheer grit those sports take and you don't need a bunch of equipment to practice a grappling or striking art.
The fact that the Filipina woman recently won a gold for her country is amazing. The chick was making weights with jugs of water and bamboo sticks!
Other sports like you said have a high entry point and are affluent which IMO loses the appeal for me.

Never been a fan, but it's admirable to be at the top of your sport - all potential long term injuries/body complications aside.

Just because you were born to a family that didn't encourage you to pursue certain activities doesn't mean there aren't a lot of people engaging in/competing in that sport.
The truth of the matter is there are tons of athletes that compete in ALL of the Olympic sports that just aren't good or aren't dedicated enough to make the muster. The whole point of the Olympics is being the elite of the elite. If you aren't willing to or aren't financially able to dedicate your life to your Olympic sport you just aren't going to make it.
For a large portion of my life I spent 2-4 hours per day either shooting skeet with a shotgun or shooting a bow. It might be something you've never even considered doing but its super common in some places. Nowhere near Olympic talent but I can watch those sports and enjoy them because I fully understand the technique.

Agree up to a certain extent with the fact that a lot of the sports in the Olympics are niche sports and not accesible to the majority of people, which is not to demean the competitors, but just makes it pretty much unrelatable to 99% of people, and because of this doesn’t carry as much merit to most of us.
However, sports that are relatively accesible to most people are by far more impressive in my opinion, just because of the sheer amount of competition you’re going up against, and to be at that level you really need to have dedicated an immense amount of time and likely have great genetics.
Tbh, the most impressive to me is when athletes from countries that don’t even get help financially or lack top level training/equipment/gear (has to be said) are able to win a medal in one of these sports, because it truly shows how hard they’ve likely worked to get to where they are.

you are never too old to appreciate the art of competition . at least at its natural form and all the nonsense left behind.
thats like saying joe montana or bret farve do not enjoy watching football games anymore even if you are not a fan of either team playing.
the olympics is probably one of the best things this planet has left as a whole to bring us together every 4 years.. i hope it will always be so

As an Aussie, nobody over here pays any attention to the Winter Olympics.
The Summer Olympics is the Olympics. And the Winter Olympics is some try hard event full of cringe rich kids.
Most of the world is the same.

Yeah. The only sports id actually watch outside of the Olympics is Basketball and Track and Field (which most people don't care about either) I just ran track in HS and coach it now, so it intrigues me. Swimming, gymnastics, ping pong, rowing, diving etc is like watching paint dry unless..

Any 'sport' with subjecrive scoring needs be removed from the olympics.
Dressage, gymnastics, skateboarding (lmao), snowboarding, syncronized swimming?, ribbon dancing? etc.
You are right OP a lot of these sports you have to be born into.

Just lol if you weren't hyped when Drissel won yesterday, and Ledecky coming up to second from almost not placing due to the other slow USA swimmers. Gymnastics is where it's at, pure hnnnnnnnngh. Das it, das it.

I wish there was an olympic event for clappin' cheeks.
Athletes training for years, perfecting their jackhammering technique and building up their skeet juice for a final dismount of multiple creampies and shooting over a sloots face.
The final would be pretty intense.
