Rome also had wars with the jews who was to them as afghanistan was to america - not a threat but dug in like a tick and hard to get rid of. They knew there was a rift in their church and they saw it as a way to gain more support against jewish forces. And of course the unification factor plays into this.

Also, earlier religions mostly had women as priests and Rome didn't like that, so they changed the rules when they adopted the religion so they could keep women at home producing more soldiers.
