I did DoorDash for a few months after the pandemic first started. It was better back then because there weren't as many cars on the road. Now that things are more back to normal, it's not worth it to me now.

Having said that, it was ok for instant money. However, even though I didn't do the math, I think I was probably barely breaking even most nights when you factor in the cost of gas and the wear and tear it places on your car. I drive a Mazda 3, so I was probably doing ok on the gas cost. While I was dashing, I met somebody who was dashing in a Ford F-150 and I was like "damn ... you're doing it wrong".

The upsides is that driving for DD had me going to places that I never would've even driven to. So I saw parts of my town that I never even knew existed. I delivered to really high end neighborhoods filled with nothing but one percenters, to really down trodden ghetto places where I was basically going in and then getting out as fast as I can. It was pretty interesting.

I also felt I became a better driver. I've had a few close calls, though. Most of the time, new orders come in when you're already out on the road driving and you feel compelled to look at your phone, which can lead to potential accidents. Luckily, I got good at being super distracted while driving before I got into any accidents.

You gotta learn how to play the game though. When I first started, I accepted any and all orders. This is a classic rookie mistake. Towards the end of my "career", I learned to only accept certain orders that meet a certain payout versus miles traveled ratio. My acceptance rating tanked to single digit percentages, but you don't get punished for that. And you end up sitting around doing nothing a lot more. However, I found I ended up making just as much money (sometimes more) as if I had accepted all orders, only without the wear and tear on my car, wasted gas, and increased probability I will get into an accident.

However, DoorDash can do some sketchy things to trick you into accepting low-ball orders which is one of the reasons why I stopped doing DD.

Also, if a restaurant doesn't have the order ready by the time you get there to pick it up, give them like 8 to 10 minutes. If it's still not ready, then cancel the order and bounce. When I was noob, I thought it was my obligation to follow through with the order so I sat around waiting like a little b1tch no matter how long it took. However, you're not making any money if you're just sitting around waiting. Eventually I learned that this was not the way, and learned to not be afraid to cancel orders. However, you do get punished for canceling orders so you need to keep track of restaurants that take a long time to get orders ready and avoid accepting orders for them.

Some restaurants would also treat DD drivers basically as scum, too. Which I always thought that was an odd attitude to have considering that food delivery services was probably the only thing keeping them afloat during the height of the pandemic. Bunch of ingrateful bastards.

Doing DD was a pretty chill and interesting way to make some side money on your free time. However, I heard that if you want to make some real money doing gig work you have to use multiple apps at the same time. I dunno about that, though. I think if I multi-app'd, it would start to feel like an actual job.

If you work in a big city and can do Uber eats on a bike it’s definitely worth it.

-I know how to drive (not to bring up initial D again) but race driving coorelates to smooth low friction driving so my imputs are all very smooth, gradual and balanced so its easy on the engine and suspension which really makes all the difference
-my car is Japanese from the most dependable era and barely has 100k miles on it all freeway miles

I can totally relate to a lot of what you said but especially the bolded part is a unique hidden gem about it. You go around seeing places and people you normally wouldn't see and it really lets feel connected to the city in real time seeing the hustle and bustle in a way you never would otherwise. Youre like keeping a pulse on everything and exploring random pockets of the world you never would otherwise have reason to.

I also have my phone in a magnetic back case and a magnet holder on my car for handsfree bluetooth connected to the audio so when I get in and out of the car its seamless and handsfree just magnets, no fumbling with holders or cables. I cant explain how chilled out it is lol. Super relaxed. Can stream Youtube or music the whole time with directions in the background.

I only really need to focus at pickup and drop off and the rest of the driving is on auto pilot mostly just streaming entertainment.

i just looked at the center console pics, too bad it isnt double din, if it was double din then its super easy to add android auto to those older cars that had standardize radios where the radio was just a radio. Actually easier to put in a nice sound system for cheap compared to new cars with all that chit integrated and not standardized. You just have to run it on your phone which isnt bad.

Compared to a regular schedule where you are limited. The gates open around 8 am and you can go all the way till past midnight. Thats also the beauty of it is you don't have to ask someone for hours or permission to binge grind you can just do it with no limits.

yeah the magnet is actually on an extension console thing that sticks out far towards me to the right of my steering wheel with magnetic pads for both horizontal or widescreen sticking on and off at a convenient angle and position. Spent some time calibrating it for max efficiency.

but its on iPhone for me and the app is actually on the phone so I wouldn't actually want Apple CarPlay or anything since the phone needs to come into the places with me. I just use a classic Kenwood stereo with bluetooth and legacy iPod controls. Pretty much if I push play or pause on my Kenwood it will control the phone and the volume and thats about all the interaction I need from the car because the phone handles everything and is my cyborg extension of my body so it needs to be totally mobile with me hence the magnets and wireless.

Ok but at what cost? How many hours did you slave away? How many times did you dread having to get up, put your clothes on, and go somewhere because they told you to. Because they held that money over your head saying: you either come here and do this now when we say, and act how we say, or else you don't get to eat anymore and you lose it all.
