people make threads like this every time the market goes down a few percent. You can't time the market. No one knows what the market will do. If they did, they'd be rich as fuk

Ugly Monday! Major indices are down sharply but tech is taking the brunt of it – mostly for the same reasons back in April
1: The rise of rates, and the fear of rising rates in the future.
2: Hedge funds are targeting a lot of these names and driving the price down by heavily shorting the stocks.
3: Reverting back to the mean – a lot of these names had huge run-ups over the last year and perhaps got a bit stretched.
It feels like we might go lower in the short-term, but I am expecting a rally into yearend – November/December and even into January.

If so, history tells us the probability of those statements is very low. Given how many retirement accounts are tied up in stock markets and rich cronie friends are fully invested in the markets, the Government has every incentive to make sure crashes aren't permanent. Plus, inflation = higher profits long-term for companies since they'll pass that chit on to the poors who buy their gear instead of their stock.

If you're in your 30s or even early 40s and you sell you're just an idiot. Buy every 5% drop and never sell. Once you hit 50 go 50 50 stocks and bonds and you'll be fine.
Survival. When the jungle tears itself down and builds itself into something new. Guys like you and me, we end up dead. Doesn’t really mean anything. Or, if we happen to live through it, well that doesn’t mean anything either.

Cashcels always lose in the long run. The best has been the past ~18 months... cash has lost so much value relative to investment-grade assets that there is truly no question as to which investor is winning (between the one 100% in stocks and the one who carries even 10-20% of their net worth in cash)

I had a friend who caught a windfall of 500k in cash back in 2013. srs. He hasn't done a cot dayum thing with it.
How much in real terms has he lost to inflation?
How much has he lost in stock market gains?
He could legit be retired right now.

Total S&P 500 annual return (including dividend re-investments) from 1/1/2013 - 10/4/2021: 15.53%
$500k invested in the S&P 500 on 1/1/2013 would worth be $1.75M today.
$500k invested in the NASDAQ 100 (~22% annual returns since then) would be $3.0M today
Even keeping 10% of that windfall in cash would be stupid. There are seriously people like this in the world... the amount of financially incompetent people in this world is astounding
