I don’t know if this has been said, but my yellow lab did this too. The vet said it was likely allergies and gave him an allergy shot. I haven’t noticed him doing it since then. The shots are usually once a year.

This. Was just about to say, not sure if anyone else said it in the thread yet. But a lot of times dogs lick their paws raw due to allergies. Definitely find out if this is the case first before trying anything drastic to combat a behavioral issue. If it is allergies and the dog is punished for it, it won't fix the problem and he'll just be uncomfortable/in pain still.

For bones or something to chew you should try bully sticks. Only 1 ingredient and they last a long time too. As for the arthritis I’d recommend raw chicken feet. They are the highest naturally occurring source of glucosamine. Real food > supps. To source them I contact small local chicken farmers that usually raise 100-200 meat birds at a time and pay around .50-$1/lb. I usually end up with hundreds of feet and almost a full 5 gallon pale for $15. If they have hearts available, i buy them too.

My pupper did this and it was food allergies. Apparently her paws were extremely itchy.
*Look at reflection in car window and flex every time crew*
*Use half the roll to wipe after a poo crew*
*Fart in the gym and blame rotten smell on faulty ventilation crew*
*Fart at home and blame it on the dog crew*
*Watch neutron-star density poop mock me as water flushes around it and it stays put crew*
*Drive 2 minutes in the summer and back of shirt gets completely wet crew*
*Coffee black as midnight on a moonless night crew*
*Fat shame my cat on a daily basis crew*

Means the dog is super bored and anxious and depressed (srs) you need to walk it much more and give it more attention, but especially walk it. It could also be allergies if you walk it a ton and it’s not depressed/anxious. They have some antihistamine spray for their paws you can use.

Since you said it’s separation anxiety related you might want to try an antidepressant which also have anti anxiety properties for your dog. Talk to your vet.

The vet can give your dog a shot that immediately stops the itching/paw licking for three months.

We give it to our dog and its highly effective - I think the name is cytocet or cytopoint. Your vet will know.

One of mine used to go to town on every single paw and made them look terrible when they should have been a perfect white color. This spray was the only thing that worked and completely changed the look of his paws and his need to chew them:

Also, get a canine allergy test done as it can show you any foods your pup might be allergic to. Diet/treats/environment is probably a big contributor. You'll save a lot of money in the long run too.
