Avoid LAX at all costs. Best closest nearby airport is Burbank. After that Long Beach. Then Santa Ana. Any of these are way better than LAX.

This. It's crazy, and although all major cities are like this, southern Cali and Bay area has the absolute worst contrast of extremities in the entire country. It's so in your face and zero hiding of anything. At least other cities make an attempt to hide their homeless problem, whereas Cali let's it all hang out bare wide open.
