It depends entirely on the mom. If the mom is wife material then it is great to raise a child as a step-father. You get to raise a human being and instill your own values and treat them as your own child. Think of it another way. The school system is trying to kick out parents and not allow parents any say in what the kids are taught. Parents are very mad about this. Why? One thing I noticed growing up with parents who split is that the men seemed to be more willing to take care of me than women. Nah. That’s what my dad used to tell me but in retrospect I believe it was more than that. I’m talking about guys who dated my mom for years, lived with her and everything. It wasn’t just being nice. If I was young and unattached, a single mom wouldn't be my first choice. More for the implications on my relationship with the mother, rather than a desire to avoid investing resources in another man's child though. Marriage can be hard enough under ideal circumstances without adding additional challenges to the relationship.

An experience I had: After I took my first job out of college we moved to a new location and I was asked if I could volunteer as an adult leader with the Boy Scout group affiliated with a local church in that area. I was In my late 20's (engineering PhD, took a few years extra) at the time and had 2 kids at the time, but I told them I could. Over the next 9 years we lived in the area I rotated through a variety of positions in the local scout group, but helped out in one way or another for probably 3/4 of the time we lived there. The last Sunday we went to church before we moved I had one of the fathers come up to me, a little misty eyed, and thank me for all the time I'd put in with his sons over the years. I'd been a leader for three of them, and took them on dozens of hikes, campouts, and backpacking trips. The dad wasn't really an outdoor person, but his sons loved fishing and camping and he thanked me for teaching all of them to fish, and commented that I had taught them things that he couldn't.

My experience volunteering isn't the same as picking up step kids, but it was a very rewarding experience. A substantial chunk of my vacation time was donated to taking kids other than my own camping, but on the flip side I think it made me a better person. It certainly gave me a head start at working with teenagers and made me a better parent. Even though I don't think it's for me, I can see how being a stepdad could bring someone a lot of joy.
