It's important to rest. I'm around your age as well and I don't lift like I used to in my early 20s.

It depends on how long and frequently you have been lifting.

You can regain your former strength and prowess relatively sooner than you think, weeks, months, or even after over a year of hiatus.

Chronic injuries completely healed would be an added bonus.

It's great for you to re-start lifting with good spirits.

Have you tried pressing with a more neutral grip (or 45 degrees, somewhere between 90s and netural seem to be the best). I don't like barbell presses of any kind, specially if it's bothering you

replace them with dumbbells wih a better angle and you should be good to go!

Surprised you felt better

I genuinely feel like I end up with more aches when I don’t workout.
"One day I won't be able to lift any more. Not I won't want to lift. I mean physically unable. That day could be decades from now or it could be tomorrow. All I know is that's the day I'll wish I could lift more than ever. The day I'd give anything for one more workout, one more set, or one more cardio session. So go hard and enjoy every workout, every set, every rep. Because one day you will wake up and you will never get it back."

Dumbbells hurt way less for just that reason.

45 degrees is perfect.

But I don't get anywhere near the same workout from only dumbbell. Not sure why.

Get better at dumbbell pressing, you're get stronger and left heavier dumbbell. You'll also get more range of motion

stick to it for a while and you'll see a difference

Feltgoodman.

Gotta get back in that gym boyos. Let the gains begin.

Anyone else stopped for a while and just had to get back at it after a bit? I feel like at 35 if I stop completely I'll eventually wither into a giant weak ass pussy.
For the joints. Are you planning deload weeks? Stretching 1-2x daily? Maintenance work on the small neglected muscles? Taking joint supplements?

I’ve been doing that and it’s helped out a lot. Especially the stretching and maintenance work.

It's like old man strength. It takes a long ass time to develop tendon/ligament strength. Especially if you're a gym bro and just worry about looking huge and never work on it. You can develop muscle strength way faster than tendon/ligament strength which is why you injure them. Protraction, retraction, depression, elevation, rotation never trained. Just do triceps push downs and bicep curls, cause big arms. Do a bench press you can't hold protraction for and don't even understand why depression...BAM! Shoulder injury.

I lifted in 5th grade through high school, quit, then got back into it last year. I don't get aches and pains, but I might when I get older.

Maybe taking longer breaks between workouts so you don't strain yourself, getting those hypertrophic gains from resting after training.

I was thinking about getting into hog trapping, they are invasive down here and have no closed season or bag limits.

Down in Texas they will load up in helicopters with night vision and M4s just to hunt hogs, it's nuts.
Do mostly (60-70%) calisthenics and cardio crew. No point to lift heavy at a certain age if you’re reasonably aesthetic already and not competing.

I went with Animal Flex. I don't know what is in it that is helping, but something is. I am sure I could find something similar that is cheaper but I am too lazy to do the research to save $15/mo or so. It is a lot of pills to take at once, typical of the brand i guess
