The studio was originally set to cast Jai Courney as Deadshot. That's who they wanted and offered the role to.

Until Will Smith head about Margot Robbie being offered Harley Quinn.

Then Will turns down ID2 and gets his agent to tell the studio he wants in on Suicide Squad...... even though they have no idea which role to give him. Will says the reason is "he wants to move forward, and not claw backwards"..... this coming from the guy who just did Bad Boys For Life.

Eventually the studio decides to give Deadshot to Will because he was a bigger name than Jai Courtney.

here's an article from 2014 talking about it. Notice how everyone was offered a specific role, but the article has no idea who Will is gonna be, because at the time, Will was trying to get in on it.
