And there's still a huge amount of benefits to rooting in 2021. I sincerely think a lot of the reason you sometimes hear people now say it "isn't worth it" is because OEM's don't want people rooting their phones to begin with, and to that same end a lot more phones these days have totally locked bootloaders (and more complicated partition schemes) so it's much harder or impossible to root. I legit think there's a push now from OEMs shilling the idea that rooting is bad/not worth it just because, like everything else in the tech market, they're trying to tighten it down and take away full ownership.

I specifically look for phones with unlockable bootloaders.
Yeah exactly that. Slightly newer, thinner, cooler design, has a whole 15mb more of internal storage!!

Really? I would've thought that all the benefits of rooting came to a halt when phones didn't have performance/heating/battery life issues anymore. I remember I had stuff like lspeed, hibernation apps, terminal scripts, bloatware removers etc on my S4 to make it work after 2016ish. (It also had a giant 7800mah anker battery in it, it was huge like a brick lol)

I understand that, but is it really necessary? Phones function fine without it these days. See how phones run flawlessly, ads are removed with non root apps etc.

Once in a while you see them still NOS on ebay. I'd like to go back to one or a Blackberry.
Yeah, Opera mini works on mine to this day, will work for the next decade so I'm fine to use it.

Hmmm, a few models up would land you with a smartphone, better off getting the more expensive reliable ones at that point. (What ones have u got in mind?)

Pick it up! Some of the sellers are selling them cos they found it somewhere. You'd expect the battery's not to work after not being used for 14+ years, but they still work fine.

Yeah, the blackberry curve had an awesome keyboard. Camera was pretty solid too.

EDIT: 3000th post wow!! Probably my last 1000th increment.
I used to have one of these like 20 years ago:

[img]https://the-gadgeteer.com/assets/sph-n200-3.jpg[/mg]
Would that phone work in 2021?
So I guess you're carrying around multiple dictionaries around with you at all times?

Your other two points are just ridiculous to the point where I won't even address them.
The other 2 points were commented on again by saying it's useful to have on hand 24/7.

Actually, people did stop using disposable cameras in around 2010? Hasn't been an issue for a while.

I just don't like seeing how overly reliant people are on these little gadgets, it is mind numbing. Many people I've met are honestly such useless human beings without it.

Hence the balance comment

I just went from an iPhone X to an iPhone 13. Just the regular 13. The X was actually the second one I had. The first one died after a year and was replaced by warranty. I only upgrade when current phone is about to die.

Unfortunately I’m not tech savvy, and it’s easy to use. Also my phone links to my kids phone/tablet to monitor usage. So I’m stuck in the iPhone loop now.

Lol, so much money being thrown around. You're old enough to have lived as an adult pre 2010, how did you manage back then with flip phones, to then be in 2021 relying on your £1000+ smartphones as 2nd nature??

Actually, how would you function if your Iphone was taken away?

I never gave a chit about phones and have been using my iPhone 7 for 5 years now. I went to Best Buy though to see the new phones and the 13 Pro is definitely one of those iconic phones that can be used for 5+ years and will eventually be remembered like the 6S is today.

It’s a good size, great battery life, insane processors and cameras, and the screen is a variable refresh rate OLED.

Don't care about the new tech and all that chit as long as I can browse the net and use apps without it being a slow piece of chit, current phone is 4 years old, zero fuks given. I don't care about upgrading but I'm scared it'll die soon

You say that, but your pixel is pretty expensive lol.

Yeah, people these days are clowns, having a phone call on a monitor sized phone.

Haha, I use this phone cos it looks insane. Blue neon lights! Much better design than these all screen phones with 0 design. Flipping up a phone is much easing to answer a call too.

Yeah but the galaxy s9 is almost 4 years old, far too expensive. Nothing groundbreaking/useful has come out in terms of phone technology for years. I swear they've gone backwards in terms of usage with their removal of memory cards and headphone jacks lol.

Iconic? Flip phones and the iPhone 4 are "iconic". The newer iPhone are just the next one in the sequence, no real jawdropping changes.

I see, but what is the need for outlandish performance on phones? Unless you play games.

Honestly, I prefer the camera quality on the old razrs/flip phones. This ultra clear capture stuff, I don't know, I just don't like the way it looks. A slightly pixelled image just looks cooler. Plus, it doesn't take up copius amounts of space.

E.g, photo on krzr is 200kb, photo on latest whatever is probably like 5mb.
Yea lol. I do think this camera is the best I’ve had but I don’t think it’s anything super special compared to my older ones. Idk, I’m not a camera guy so I may just be unaware.

I wouldn’t even have gotten this if my 8+ hadn’t got fukked up. The only time I upgrade is when mine gets messed up. I don’t get the people having to buy the newest one every year. It’s basically a miscing and texting machine to me. I’ve always liked apple since I did graphic design years ago. They like everyone have their cons though. Never been into the whole phone wars debate really.

Actually, how would u manage in 2021 with ur 2001 phone? Would it be unbearable or would you be able to carry on with life as normal? Lots of people these days would lose basically 99-100% of their persona without one.

OnePlus 9.

I bought the 8T or whatever two days before the 9 came out and T Mobile was having a promo so they let me swap and pay the difference.

Before that I hada Moto Stylo Plus power or something. I never go for flagship phones, usually midrange or a bit higher
