Nothing smaller than a .380 or .38 in handgun, nothing smaller than a .223 in rifle, and nothing smaller than a 20g on shotgun.

I started with a concealed carry Springfield xds 9. I like the two passive safeties for having a gun loaded ready to shoot strapped above my nuts.

Built a Glock 17 after and then purchased one full Oem for bedside safe and use built for range only.

Got hunting rifle out of way, I’m already comfortable shooting rifles and will go elk/bear hunting on occasion so grabbed a 300 win mag cuz that’s what I’ve borrowed from my bro.

Picked up a 12 gauge for bird hunting

Then for a murder loot kill/zombie apocalypse situation I picked up a 10inch barrel AK in 9mm.

My reasoning being I have thousands of 9mm and hollow points will work just fine for what I want the gun to do. It’s even surprisingly accurate at 200yds for what it is.

Looking at a home defense shotgun and maybe a full length AR next.

There's actually been some great suggestions in here. However you may not want to carry, but if you can legally do it (with or without a permit), I'd get a pistol first. It's great protection to conceal, and can be a great backup for a home defense weapon.

IMO in order of importance

Pistol > Shotgun > Rifle. Rifles are great, but should you ever need something for home defense, an adrenaline dump is one hell of a drug and without proper training, that rifle might give you storm trooper aim. A shotgun with buckshot would be more forgiving with poor aim. I still say pistol first for being able to conceal carry it on your person.

9mm pistol and train with it. Ammo is pretty easy to come by and inexpensive compared to everything else except .22.

AR15 is a good recommendation if you live somewhere you can train with it. A lot of ranges are pistol caliber only.

Training is key for any gun you intend for self defense. If you are a horrible shot and aren't comfortable shooting, you might as well throw rocks.
