That’s where you live every day. Of course I want it to be as nice as possible. It’s nice having the ability to move about and switch locations. If you only have a few rooms it’s harder to do that without stepping out of your own privacy around people. The more space basically increases privacy.

The smaller of a house you buy the more likely you are to be crammed in next to neighbors (and more of them since all of the homes will be smaller).

Space is at a premium in a world full of people. If you can carve out more of it for yourself by paying for a bigger house I say it’s one of the better ways to spend your money.

As for the extra upkeep, you can pay people for that too. If you don’t personally want to do upkeep, factor that into your home costs and simply buy a house that fits in your budget. It might be smaller than if you were to take the work on yourself, but that’s the trade off. Figure out what’s important to you and budget for it.
The bolded is not true. There are tons of neighborhoods with big houses that are on top of each other with barely any yard.

As for me the house I sold 5 years ago was the perfect size. I think it was around 1700-1800 sq ft and that included the finished room in basement. It was a long ranch with 3 bedrooms so wasn't like living in a box. I really wouldn't want any bigger if I could afford a house at this point.

Well bigger yard = you need a bigger lawn mower, and having a lot of floors to vacuum or mop is a pain, but I imagine the extra space and spare bedrooms would be worth it.

My Mommy's house in the 80's had a huge upstairs rec room where me and my friends would have sleepovers and it was awesome.

They buy big houses trying to impress people that don't really give a fuk.
A guy that works with me bought a huge house, paid 500k for it and dumped another 100-150 into it.
Dude was walking around like he owns the world until his sister bought a house that's bigger then his lol.

Just lol if you have a house and not using a robot vacuum. My Movo robot has every room mapped out so I just tell it to clean a room and it goes there, does it's thing, and goes back to its base all on its own.

I've worked from home for over 10 years, and have tripled the size of my home in that time as well.

The smaller home was fine, but now that I have a spouse who also works from home + a child who is home during some work hours (and a lot in summer, school breaks, etc), having all that extra space is a lifesaver. I can't even imagine 2 people working from home with multiple children and being in each other's face the whole time.

Big homes are only impressive if you are within a few miles of a major city like
Ny or LA other then that it’s gutter trash. Imagine spending 500k and 2k a month on a big home 20 miles out surrounded by gutter trash people

As a single male, I've only been interested in 3 bedroom houses tbh. Yes it means more property taxes, yes it means more maintenance down the road, but here's why:

1) 1 room is bedroom, 1 room is office room, 1 room is either guest room or otherwise a gym room. Normally I'd rather my garage be the gym room though if possible.

2) If I ever get a LTR that actually did turn into a marriage/kids, can repurpose the guest room.

3) 3 Bedrooms would appeal to a broader audience than 1/2 bedrooms for when I wanna sell it.

If I was a family man I'd want 4 or 5 probably.

2600 sq ft master race checking in.

1/2 acre lot, would like a LITTLE more but too much lawn is nearly as much work as too much house. Beyond an acre or so would rather have forested land than lawn tbh.

Unless of course you're balling enough to have house staff to maintain it for you is different. But that's not the kind of people OP is talking about here.

I have a huge house. 5k square feet (2 people) and I love it.


Have a huge theater room, big 4k projector and awesome surround sound setup. Have a ping pong and poker room, extra bedrooms and big storage room, and a home gym, home office, etc.


I absolutely love it. It's not even hard at all to clean, idk why people say that. I guess if you're ultra anal and want to like vacuum behind every couch, sure, but otherwise it's easy for me to clean.

The main reason I wanted a 3 bedroom house was because I planned to use one of the bedrooms as a home office, so that has worked out really well now that I WFH permanently.

I live in a 3br ~1400 q ft house by myself and outside of video game and board games I have somewhat of a minimalist setup

I still really wish I had another 2 bedrooms tbh

So many things you can do with extra rooms

Home theater
Game room
Guest bedroom
Office
Indoor gym
Supply closet

Plus an actual bedroom for sleeping that's like 7 rooms I could use easily

Do they just wander around inside all day or just eventually settle in one small area of the place.

A big house with empty unused rooms is 80IQ.

If you have a big house you utilize most of with a little extra room for guests/storage while having a big outdoor space you're doing it right.

One of my best friends in high school's family was a real estate tycoon and he lived in a 8,800 square foot house in Northern NJ. The family of four lived in one side of the house and the other side was never stepped foot in. The live in maid lived in the basement. Srs its ridiculous.

I’m single and would live in a 5000 sqft house bare minimum if I had the resources. Large gym ,an office , spare rooms for company , a dedicated home theatre room , a dedicated games room with old school arcade games ,pool table , and 2 lane bowling alley .
I’d also have a large detached shop for fabricating , with a cnc mill, cnc plasma cutter , cnc laser ,cnc router table etc .
One side of the shop would be dedicated to welding and the steel side of things , while the other side would be wood working .
Attached 5 car garage for toys , outdoor pool , you get the idea

I don’t think it’s large homes that are the real problem, it’s McMansions. Cheaply built, ugly, planned incorrectly and expensive.

There are some very practical reasons like:

-more potential for increase in the property value
-rent income of unused space
-space to run a business and not have to rent commercial space
-recreational activities (pool, hot tub, games room, theatre)
-entertaining family/guests




Also as some have mentioned it can be a status thing


In case some of you haven't realized yet, almost everything a man or woman does in life is either subconsciously or consciously to attract a suitable mate/mates

I grew up in a 3600 sq foot home, wasn't fancy (my dad built the thing in the country so it was maybe 100k in building materials at the time)

It was nice but a 2000 sq foot home is goat size tbh, just too big of a home

have a detached garage/shop for the ultimate man gains
