Underwater cables are the invisible force driving the modern internet, with many in recent years being funded by internet giants such as ********, Google, Microsoft and Amazon. They carry almost all our communications and yet – in a world of wireless networking and smartphones – we are barely aware that they exist.

There's already metaverse crypto projects using blocky dogchit graphics selling land for more than your real life land is worth.
But now imagine in a few years where that game is not blocky dogchit graphics but completely lifelike.
And you think people won't flock to that when Google, Meta, Apple, Microsoft tell them to? Remember that everything in your news feed, the media, YouTube, is handed to you by their algorithms. All they have to do is convince you that it's the best thing since sliced bread and everybody is making a fortune in it and loving their new virtual life. Like they did with COVID, NFTs, crypto in the past 2 years.
We are essentially all predictable addicted slaves and once the tech catches up the majority of humanity will live in the metaverse. Think of it as the next step of the internet.

Now imagine Meta, an actual trillion dollar company, makes a hyperrealistic virtual world (e.g. look at the Matrix Unreal Engine 5 showcase - not the cinematic but an actual person playing the game and flying over the world and how realistic it looks and how fast it renders) and have an enormous marketing budget and reach to shill the ever living fuk out of it.
Again, its still a few years away as the tech needs to catch up but it absolutely will happen

though, the gvt. could institute things to change this
however, the gvt. does not want their money to go away

The cable system also constitutes a US soft power play, linking these countries together and to America, not China. An earlier draft, called the Pacific Light Cable, also involved ******** and Google and would have included Hong Kong as well. Washington, however, put its foot down over the Hong Kong leg, arguing it exposed the entire system's data to misuse by China.
China Mobile was to have played a role in the latest transpacific cable, but agreed to exit the project. Africa, meanwhile, has seen its international bandwidth capacity growing at a compound annual rate of 47% from 2016 to 2020. Asia is just behind it at 40%.
And Google, ********, Microsoft and Amazon between them have accounted for 64% of all used capacity, in data from 2019.

That's their business model. Everything else is simply an expense to get companies to pay them for ads.
They are not a fibre laying company. They probably didn't even do it themselves - they contracted it out to companies that lay lines down.
They put it down so that your search experience is better. But your searches are not their primary business. It is delivering ads that are related to your search.
Now, yeah, they have attempted to expand because they are keenly aware that over 90% of their revenue comes from ads. And almost all of it has failed.
Why do they have gmail? It's so they can show you ads. Because companies pay for those ads.
Your other points are not related to Google specifically. There are always companies that lobby the gov't. If Google falls then some other lobby will take their place.

as mentioned, Netflix and im not sure its close. Tons of competitors who have or are in the process of getting the rights back to shows they own to play on their own streaming service is going to leave Netflix with just their own series, most of which aren't great. And that also eliminates the biggest draw of Netflix which was that you could watch the entire show without having to wait for the Next season/episode.

everything on Netflix is free in HD online, the UI and easy access with no pop ups is the main draw I guess but is that worth the money.
Disney+ or prime video might just end up buying it at least that'd be one less app to use.

Netflix and it's not even close, everything else is far more entrenched.
Would be a lot better discussion with Netflix off the list of considerations and then I would say ******** if they bomb the whole metaverse play.

Netflix.
They're the only one with numerous competitors, are bleeding cash, and are not turning a profit.
People are also getting pissed with their political bullchit.
Meta isn't going anywhere. They made a super power move that most people don't understand yet.
Google is going to coast. I wouldn't invest in them, but I don't think they're going anywhere.
Apple has too much capital to go anywhere. I question their 20 year future.
Microsoft continues to acquire and grow. Definitely not going anywhere.
Amazon will rise and fall with the economy and consumer spending. I don't see them going anywhere.

Lol @ thinking any of Big Tech is going to "die"
Ever heard of "too big to fail?"
Its the norm in our crony capitalist and corporate socialism society now.
If any Big Tech, which is closely intertwined with government, is on the verge of dying, they'll get a bailout from taxpayers via the government
