One of the biggest killed of old people is harsh winters. It gives them things like pneumonia.
If you have a few years of mild winters, you will have more old people than is, for want of a better word, normal.
This drags down your apparent death rate and means that there are many more people who are vulnerable to, say, a respiratory disease.

In the UK, this is actually the case. We had around 5 years of abnormally few deaths, so now when these crypt keepers finally go, the "excess" deaths measured against the 5 year average look enormous.
