Moderna Covid vaccine for kids under 6 years old wasup to 44% effectiveagainst omicron infection

Moderna on Wednesday released interim data on the effectiveness of its vaccine for children under 6 years old.

The shots were about 44% effective at preventing infection from omicron in kids 6 months to under 2 years old.

Moderna will ask the Food and Drug Administration to grant emergency use authorization for the vaccine for children under 6 years old as soon as possible, CEO Stephane Bancel said in a statement.

The company also asked the FDA to authorize its vaccine for children 6- to 11-years-old.

Moderna wants to give FDA ‘flexibility’ in deciding eligibility for4th Covid shot, CEO says

Moderna wanted to provide U.S. regulators “flexibility” in determining eligibility for a fourth Covid vaccine dose, CEO Stephane Bancel told CNBC.

The drugmaker asked the FDA to clear the additional shot for all Americans ages 18 and up.

“You have people that are younger adults that have comorbidity factors, and they mightneed sooner fourth dose to protect them,” Bancel said.

Novavax requested U.S. EUA of its COVID-19 vaccine onJan. 31, 2022, but the FDA still hasn't made a decision.

The FDA does appear to be taking its time with the review -- probably because it doesn't feel a sense of urgency.

Who Is Moderately or Severely Immunocompromised?

Many conditions and treatments can cause a person to be immunocompromised (having a weakened immune system). People are considered to be moderately or severely immunocompromised if they have:

Been receiving active cancer treatment for tumors or cancers of the blood
Received an organ transplant and are taking medicine to suppress the immune system
Received a stem cell transplant within the last 2 years or are taking medicine to suppress the immune system
Moderate or severe primary immunodeficiency (such as DiGeorge syndrome, Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome)
Advanced or untreated HIV infection
Active treatment with high-dose corticosteroids or other drugs that may suppress their immune response
Talk to your healthcare provider about COVID-19 vaccination and your medical condition.

If that isn't you, then move on...

FDA authorizes fourth Pfizer and Moderna Covid vaccine doses for people age 50 and older

The Food and Drug Administration has authorized a fourth Pfizer and Moderna dose for people age 50 and older.

The FDA made the decision without consulting its committee of independent vaccine experts.

BA.2 has gained ground in the U.S. since February and is expected to become the dominant variant here in the coming weeks.

Top FDA official says fully vaccinated Americans may needmore Covid shots this fall.

Dr. Peter Marks at the Food and Drug Administration said people might need another booster shot in the fall.

Marks also said the U.S. might need to switch to adifferent vaccinethat targets specific variants of Covid.

The FDA on Tuesday approved a fourth dose for people age 50 and older and fifth dose for certain younger individuals with compromised immune systems.

Biden warns U.S. won’t have enough Covid vaccine shots this fallif Congress fails to pass funding

President Joe Biden said the U.S. has enough vaccine supply to ensure people ages 50 and older can get their fourth doses. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention cleared fourth shots for these people Tuesday.

However, Biden said the U.S. will not have enough supply to guarantee free access to vaccines for all Americans in the fall.

The president also unveiled a new government website, covid.gov, where Americans can find out where they can obtain masks, tests, vaccines and treatments.

The Food and Drug Administration, in a briefing document, said the composition of the current Covid-19 vaccines may need a change to ensure high levels of protection.

Pfizer and Moderna are conducting clinical trials on vaccines based on the omicron variant.

The FDA’s committee of vaccine experts will meet Wednesday to discuss how the U.S. should go about changing the vaccines if needed.

Moderna’s redesigned vaccine includes nine mutations found in the beta Covid variant.

A 50-microgram dose doubled the antibodies, which block the virus from infecting human cells, against the omicron variant six months after injection.

Moderna is also developing a vaccine that targets 32 mutations present in omicron.

The FDA is debating whether the U.S. will need updated Covid shots ahead of an expected wave of infection in the fall.
